Presque Isle’s Marsh Trail closed because of beaver damage

Marsh Trail at Presque Isle State Park is temporarily closed because of damage done by beavers during the winter.

Marsh Trail’s trailhead is just inside the north entrance to Sidewalk Trail, across the road from the Presque Isle Lighthouse. The quarter-mile trail bisects Cranberry Pond, a favorite spring haunt of wood ducks, Canada geese, woodpeckers, warblers and other songbirds.

Anne DeSarro, environmental education specialist supervisor, said beavers “cut through the trail completely.” DeSarro said maintenance crews have been at work. There’s no timetable for the trail to reopen.

When open, Marsh Trail offers easy access to Ridge Trail, which as its name suggests rides a ridge that offers shaded overviews of Cranberry Pond to the north and bird-rich thickets bordering Pond of the Woods to the south. Ridge Trail remains accessible from a north trailhead near the maintenance building. There’s also less visible access along Sidewalk Trail near its southeast trailhead.

Fox Trail, which shares a trailhead with Marsh Trail, also is open. It can be followed west toward the maintenance building and used to loop back to Ridge Trail.

Check a map of Presque Isle’s trail systems for directions and trail information.
