New life jacket law takes effect in New York state Nov. 1
Be aware that New York’s cold-weather life-jacket boating law goes into effect Sunday, Nov. 1.
Those people operating or aboard motorboats, canoes, kayaks, rowboats and sailboats less than 21 feet must wear personal flotation devices while they are on the water from Nov. 1 to May 1. Violations could cost $25 to $100 each.
Kids under 12 on boats 65 feet or less must wear life jackets regardless of the time year.
Check out Pennsylvania’s life jacket guidelines.

I believe this is a very good law. You may think you a great swimmer but if the water is cold it could tighten up your muscles. If that happens while you have a life vest on you will be fine until help arrive. If you don’t it will be a helpless situation. Also if you aren’t a good swimmer and do fall overboard you won’t be panicked because the life vest will keep you a float. They can come in many cool colors and a vinyl vest feels great to wear. It can’t harm you!
