Edinboro University of Pennsylvania graduate Andy Obringer is looking for help from northwestern Pennsylvania residents and hunters for a research project that could open the door to graduate school.

Obringer, who now lives in Minnesota, and Edinboro’s Dr. Michelle Shuey created an online survey that will help them analyze habitat composition patterns and understand the recent growth of black bear populations in our corner of the state.

Here’s where you come in: Take the survey and document your encounters with black bears, especially in Erie County and Crawford County.

“We consider a sighting/encounter as any instance where a bear and human come into contact. That could include but is not limited to, seeing bear scat in the woods, bear tracks in your yard, damage to a bird feeder, a bear passing in front of your car, having a bear act aggressively towards you on a trail, etc.”

It’s always exciting to see a wild bear. Unless he or she is peering in your window or loping around your backyard in search of the birdfeeder or trash can.

One black bear recently was caught on videotape as it scoped out the Fairview High School loading dock:

It’s not an unusual sight for many in the Erie area. The Pennsylvania Game Commission says the black bear population in the state is growing.

Have you seen a black bear in an unexpected place around northwestern Pennsylvania?

Randy Eells and his family, who own a dairy farm near Conneautville, Crawford County, shared photos of their encounters with creatures far less likely to be seen from the road than cows.

The Eells bought a trail camera in summer 2010 and set it up off Route 98 north of Littles Corners. Whatever else they expected to see, they got a couple thrills when they checked their images.

In October, a healthy-looking black bear triggered the camera as it walked past the mount. The Eells lsaid the bear later was sighted near Crossingville as well.

The real treat came a month later, when a stealthy bobcat let itself be photographed.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission says bobcats in our state usually weigh 15 pounds to 20 pounds, and as much as 35 pounds. The bobcat was protected in Pennsylvania for the final 30 years of the 20th century, but in 2000, with a population estimated at 3,500, a hunting and trapping season was re-established.

While not rare, bobcats are rarely seen. Erie Times-News outdoors writer Mike Bleech said he has seen four in his lifetime.

Thanks to the Eells for sharing their photos. Do you have any special trailcam photos to share?

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has elected not to file charges against a man who used his bow to shoot and kill a black bear Oct. 9 in Mercer County.

The Game Commission’s investigation showed that the 149-pound male bear was displaying aggressive behavior that caused James Moore to fear for his and his daughter’s safety.

“This is an unfortunate incident that resulted in the loss of a valuable wildlife resource,” said Wildlife Conservation Officer Lawrence Hergenroeder, who conducted the investigation. “My investigation determined that Mr. Moore shot the 149-pound male black bear once with his compound bow and arrow, striking it on the right side as it was proceeding down a gas line road that would have taken it immediately in front of Mr. Moore and his daughter. The bear was about 10 yards away when shot by Mr. Moore.

“Mr. Moore indicated that the bear was popping its jaws and, along with the bear moving toward him and his daughter, caused him to fear for their safety. The bear did not respond to Mr. Moore waving his arms or yelling, so he shot the bear and immediately called the Game Commission Northwest Region Office. Based on the facts, I believe that Mr. Moore was in fear for both his safety and that of his daughter. Therefore, I will not be filing charges.”

Hergenroeder was assisted in locating the bear carcass by Northwest Region Law Enforcement Supervisor Clint Deniker, Mercer County WCO Don Chaybin, Deputy WCO Ryan Ruditis, as well as WCO Cadets Matt Chipego and Chris Bergman, who are assigned to the Northwest Region for field training.

“Despite the unfortunate nature of this situation, we were able to use this investigation as a teaching opportunity to help prepare future WCOs for duty as full-time Wildlife Conservation Officers,” WCO Hergenroeder said.

Hergenroeder noted that the black bear population continues to expand in western Pennsylvania, and that there were five bears struck and killed on the roads in Mercer County so far this year.
