Van Tassel Timberland Bait’s ice-fishing tournament on Canadohta Lake has been delayed until Feb. 23.

Jerry Van Tassel this morning said the snow cover on the lake forced him to move the tournament back two weeks from its scheduled date of Feb. 9. The tournament that had been scheduled to take place Feb. 23 on Conneaut Lake has been canceled.

To participate, get tickets at Timberland Bait Shop by the morning of Feb. 23. The shop will be open for bait and tackle purchased the Thursday and Friday before the and the morning of the tournament.

The tournament is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. and run through 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded starting at 4:30.

Categories are musky, northern pike, walleye, crappie and perch.

Van Tassel Timberland Bait’s popular ice-fishing tournaments are scheduled to take place in February.

The Canadohta Lake tournament is scheduled for Feb. 9, with a Feb. 23 make-up date.

The Conneaut Lake tournament is scheduled for Feb. 23

Tickets are $15; register at Timberland Bait Shop, 36320 Dutch Hill Road, Union City.

There were 77 children dangling bait in Canadohta Lake Saturday as part of VanTassel Timberland Bait’s sixth annual kids fishing day.

Winners by category:

Perch: Lucas Leech (age 8), 9 inches

Sunfish: Three-way tie, Jake Coughenour (11), Scot Watson (11), Howie Hammond (11), 8 1/4 inches

Crappie: Alex Boylan (12) : 12 1/4 inches

Smallmouth bass: tie, Ashton Mineo (7), Emily Leehart (11), 8 1/2 inches

Largemouth bass: tie, Nathan Soliwoda (11), Jake Coughenour (11), 14 1/2 inches

Rock bass: Jordan Shaffer (6), 11 inches

Painted turtle: Alex Boylan (12)

No walleye, trout or catfish were caught.

Van Tassel Timberland Bait’s sixth annual kids fishing contest is scheduled for Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at 36320 Dutch Hill Road, Union City.

The event is for children ages 3 to 16. Entry fee is $5 per person

There will be cash prizes for the longest fish in each category: catfish, trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rock bass, walleye, perch, crappie, sunfish and turtle.

Kevin Ferrie of Erie caught the biggest walleye and won $300 Saturday at VanTassel’s Timberland Bait’s annual ice-fishing contest on Canadohta Lake.

Ferrie’s walleye was 19 3⁄4 inches and weighed 2 pounds 13 ounces.

The prize of the day was a 291⁄2-inch, 6-pound 3-ounce northern pike. Meadville’s Chris Chiesa pocketed $400 for catching the largest pike.

P.J. Brenot, of Cochranton, caught an 11-inch yellow perch and won $50, and Dan Palmer, of Parker, won $50 for his 121⁄4-inch crappie.

Bailey Kozalla, 12, of Saegertown, was the kids winners with a 20-inch, 2-pound 8-ounce walleye. She won $20.

No legal-sized musky were caught.

The contest is scheduled to run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A tournament scheduled for Feb. 4 on Conneaut Lake was postponed to Feb. 25 because of insufficient ice.

In each event, the longest musky brings $500, the longest pike $325, and the longest perch and crappie $50 each.

Registration is $15 for each tournament at Timberland Bait, 36320 Dutch Hill Road, Union City. Registration also will be available the morning of the Conneaut Lake tournament.

The Conneaut Lake tournament is Feb. 4 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting at Fireman’s Beach. The Canadohta Lake tournament is Feb. 11 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anglers at each event will fish for musky, pike, perch and crappie. The longest musky brings $500, the longest pike $325, and the longest perch and crappie $50 each. There also will be 50-50 drawings and, at Canadohta Lake, a children’s perch and crappie contest.

Timberland Bait’s fifth annual Kids Fish Day Aug. 20 drew 45 children who caught 158 fish from Canadohta Lake.

Winners:

Perch: 9 inches, Meg Goodsel, age 9, Corry

Sunfish: 7.5 inches (tie), Kaydanse Comunale, 6, Union City; Cambria Bayles, 5, Union City, Erin McGarrity, 5, Derby, N.Y.

Crappie : 10 inches, Justin Harouff, 14, Union City.

Bass: 13 inches, Shane Uber, 9, Union City.

Most fish caught: Jacob Uber, 11, Union City.

50-50 winner: Katie Brozell $70

Timberland Bait’s fifth annual kids fishing contest is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 36320 Dutch Hill Road, Union City.
