The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association’s first Fish Fry is Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. at Paderewski Park on Wattsburg Road.

The public is invited to the BYOB event. Refreshments and food are available for $12 per adult ticket, $20 for couples and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 will be admitted free of charge. Tickets can be purchased from any EPSFA board member or at the door.

Proceeds fund the Kids Memorial Day Perch Tournament and perch trips for inner-city youth.

The fish fry will follow a perch tournament for 25 children aboard the Edward John. The EPSFA and other clubs will each mentor and assist the participants.

The Erie Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Association/FishUSA.com Summer Slam Fishing Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 4-5.

Pros and amateurs alike can compete to catch walleye, steelhead and brown trout. More than $28,000 in cash and prizes was awarded in 2011.

Teams must register by July 27. Download the entry form and mail to EPSFA, P.O. Box 3341, Erie, PA 16508.

The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association’s tackle swap and meet is scheduled for Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Social Center, 2220 Reed St.

Tickets at the door are $3 for adults, $10 for ages 13-18 and free to those 12 and younger.

There will be activities, vendors and seminars including trolling tips and techniques from pro, plus new and used tackle, manufacturer reps on hand, kids casting techniques and casting contest, a dart-throwing game, fishing safety and etiquette and more.

Proceeds benefit the EPSFA Kids Only, Fishing is for Fun Day, brown trout stocking program and fish testing program

The Wolf Man Fishing Team pocketed a $5,050 grand prize for winning the Erie PA Sport Fishing Association’s sixth annual Summer Slam Sunday.

Capt. Todd McKinney’s crew won the open division title with a two-day catch of 418.50 pounds of walleye and steelhead. Wolf Man Fishing Team led wire-to-wire to top runner-up Team Big Cat, captained by Greg Catrabone, and third-place Team Vision Quest V and Capt. Pete Alex.

The open division’s biggest steelhead was a 14.30-pounder caught by Team Heart Beat, which also caught the biggest walleye, at 10.40 pounds.

Team Ditch Chicken won the amateur division and $3,350 with a two-day catch of 273.10 pounds. Ditch Chicken, captained by Paul Snyder, beat runner-up Team Slow Boat by 2.40 pounds. Day One leader Team Double Up was third at 267.50 pounds.

Team Riggers and Triggers had big steelhead honors with a 10.70-pound fish. Ditch Chicken’s 10.60-pound walleye was the biggest caught in the amateur division.

There were 55 boats in the Lake Erie tournament, three more than in 2010.

The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association’s Summer Slam is scheduled for Aug. 6-7 on the Pennsylvania waters of Lake Erie.

Register by July 29 to avoid late fees in the big-money trout and walleye tournament. Advance pro boat entry is $400, amateur $200.

Payout for the pro class is $10,000 in cash and prizes, with $2,000 available in the amateur division.

Weigh-ins will take place starting at 2:30 p.m. at Sloppy Duck Saloon at Jr’s On The Bay, 726 W. Bayfront Parkway.

Children 12 and under and their parents are invited to the Erie Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Association’s third annual Fishing Is For Fun Day May 28 at the Perry Monument, Presque Isle State Park.

EPSFA members will provide tackle, bait prizes, lunch and assistance fishing.

Registration is required and is limited to the first 75 children. Call Denise Work between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at (814) 474-5357. Include how many children and adults will take part, and if any will need fishing tackle.

Also this Memorial Day weekend, anglers of any age, whether resident or from out of state, can cast a line in Pennsylvania without first buying a license during Monday’s Fish-for-Free Day.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission sponsors two Fish-for-Free days. The next is Labor Day. All other rules apply, so check the guidelines for the waters you’ll fish.

There will be a Fish-for-Free event May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Perry Monument. Get tips and more from Fish and Boat Commission staff.
