The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association‘s first event of the season, the Spring Trout Challenge, is scheduled for April 17.

Interested in learning more about the group or event in person? Check out the monthly meeting March 30 at Calamari’s Squid Row, 1317 State St., where fisheries biologist Chuck Murray of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will talk about Lake Erie’s status and trends.

The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association‘s second annual Tackle Swap and Meet is scheduled for Jan. 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Grover Cleveland School, 1540 W. 38th Street.

Check out new and used tackles, seminars, fishing club presentations, kids activities and food and beverages.

Those who wish to trade, sell or represent merchandise can buy a table for $15. For information, call 452-0648 or e-mail pete@dreamsteelie.com or deerslayir@hotmail.com.

Proceeds benefit EPSFA programs for children, brown trout raceway and fish testing.

Tickets at the door are $3 for adults and $1 for children ages 13-18. Children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.

Anglers have until Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. to get their team set and entry fee submitted for the Fall Trout Challenge on Oct. 24.

The Erie PA Sport Fishing Association-sponsored event starts Sunday at 7:30 a.m. and wraps up at 2:30 p.m. Weigh-ins (3-4 p.m.) and awards ceremony will take place  at Sloppy Duck Saloon/Jr’s By The Bay, 726 West Bayfront Parkway.

The crew of the Shirley B won the open division and Small Program won the amateur division this past weekend in the Summer Slam put on by the Erie PA Sport Fishing Association.

Public weigh-ins for the fourth annual Walleye Challenge will take place from 3-4 p.m. Saturday at Shades Beach Park.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to start at 4:40 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the Erie Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Association, starts at 6:30 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. Saturday on the Pennsylvania waters of Lake Erie. More than 200 anglers on 60 teams, all members of the EPSFA, are expected to participate.

The Fairview-based Erie PA Sport Fishing Association is putting on a free Fishing is for Fun Day for children May 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Perry Monument area of Presque Isle State Park.

Children 12 and under and their parents are invited to the second annual event. The EPSFA will provide tackle for those who need it, plus bait, prize, a hot dog lunch and help from volunteers.

To register, call Denise Work at (814) 474-5357 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Indicate how many adults and children will attend and if children will require use of tackle. Participation is limited to 75 children.

The Erie Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Association’s Tackle Swap and Meet Event is scheduled for Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary School, 831 E. 31st St.

Adult tickets are $3 at the door. Admission for children 13-18 is $1, and those 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.

The day also will include activities and seminars including casting techniques for kids (nooon-12:45, 4:15-5); spring trout and salmon trolling etiquette (1-2); fishing safety and etiquette for kids (2:15-3, 5:15-5:45); Lake Ontario king salmon techniques 101 (3-4); and depth charge trolling tactics for walleye and trout (5-6).

Proceeds benefit EPSFA programs including kids Fishing is Fun Day, brown trout stocking and fish testing.
