This week’s western Pennsylvania waterfowl migration report from David Rearick, a member of the Avery Outdoors Pro-Staff:

Date: Jan. 17

Location: New Castle

Weather: Snow, freezing rain and some sunshine.

Snow cover: 6-8 inches depending on the location.

Water conditions: Frozen solid in most areas, some moving bodies of water still open.

Feeding conditions: Difficult because of the newly formed ice crust on top of the snow and the melt that is occurring, but leftover grain is still present and available.

Species and numbers: Low numbers of Canada Geese in the area, very few ducks.

Migrations: None to speak of.

Season stage: Late goose season.

Hunting report: Hunting has been slow as birds numbers just aren’t available.

Gossip: Hopefully we get a January warm-up to help drive some of the birds back to the north, as it appears that most of the birds are to the south of us. Mid-January is typically a lull spot in the action, we just have to hope for a change in the weather to put more birds in the area.

This week’s waterfowl migration report for western Pennsylvania from David Rearick, an Avery Outdoors Pro-Staff member:

Date: Dec. 6

Location: Linesville

Weather: Finally it is beginning to feel more like winter.

Snow cover: Depending on the spot, upwards of 3-4 inches of white stuff is on the ground.

Water conditions: Slightly better after last week’s rain storms.

Feeding conditions: Good, but buried beneath the snow.

Species and numbers: Birds numbers are finally on the rise. New ducks, geese, and divers are in the area.

Migrations: There seems to be a much needed influx of birds across the board. Hopefully this trend will continue.

Season stage: Aside from goose season, the duck season is in full swing.

Hunting report: Hunting has picked up. New birds and better wind has made better success for those that have hunted.

Gossip: It seems there is a buzz in the air that stretches over most of western Pennsylvania. While the numbers aren’t at their peak, the new birds have been offering hunters something to chase after an otherwise slow start. Now the goal is to keep the birds here and the water open.

Hunters’ attention has turned toward deer, which might be a good thing — waterfowl conditions and numbers in western Pennsylvania aren’t prime, according to this week’s report from Avery Outdoors Pro-Staff member David Rearick:

Date: Nov. 29

Location: Linesville

Weather: Cold nights, moderate days of sunshine.

Snow cover: A dusting over the weekend.

Water conditions: Low.

Feeding conditions: Feeding conditions are still good, not much has changed in the last few weeks.

Species and numbers: Low numbers of both ducks and geese.

Migrations: Aside from last week’s Tundra swan migration, there has been little activity.

Season stage: Most all season are currently open, with goose season closing for a few weeks of deer season.

Hunting report: Despite good weather over the weekend with wind from the west, hunting is still slow. I had high hopes for bird movement during our hunt on Lake Erie on Saturday, and there was very little to speak of. Not sure where the birds are, but they better think about making and a appearance shortly before we are frozen solid.

Gossip: There are some reports of new birds over in Ohio, but in Pennsylvania things are still very slow and birds number are as low as I have seen them in some time. Across the board many hunters are having slow days with a few good hunts when the birds are found feeding. No one has seen it this slow in quite some time from what I am hearing.
