A day at the North Pier Sunday had my wife and me questioning why we haven’t spent more time there.
Our catch-and-release haul: Two big bass, a crappie, five yellow perch, a mess of rock bass and, regrettably, untold numbers of worm-stealing round gobies.
A great wind cooled the pier, and the goings-on were marvelous to watch: Tugboats pushing the dredging barges out of the open lake and back through the channel; pleasure boaters galore; and birds everywhere. Among the countless gulls and swallows, we singled out an osprey on the hunt over the big water, a Common Tern, two Double-crested Cormorants, and a Great Blue Heron doing its best to cavort with gulls, who were having none of it.
