James A. Chapman of Warren was appointed today by Gov. Tom Corbet to the Governor’s Advisory Council for Hunting, Fishing and Conservation.

Corbett created the council by executive order “to help ensure the concerns of hunters, anglers and others are heard at the highest levels of state government”

The order consolidates several previous advisory councils into a single entity. The new council consists of individuals concerned with the recreational use and conservation of Pennsylvania’s natural resources, including hunters, trappers, anglers and other conservationists.

The council members serve one-year terms without compensation. Their mandates:

  • “Review and make written recommendations to the governor regarding any issue appropriate for governmental action that might affect the recreational use and conservation of the state’s wildlife and other natural resources.
  • “Review and make written recommendations regarding policies adopted or regulations issued by DCNR, the Fish and Boat Commission, the Game Commission or the Department of Environmental Protection, that might affect the recreational uses of the state’s natural resources.
  • “Review and make written recommendations regarding pending legislation and proposed regulations impacting natural resources.”

Go swimming.

And here’s a bit of help — a guide to Pennsylvania swimming holes. Surely not all of them, and few in northwestern Pennsylvania. But even thinking about swimming holes might remind you of your favorite from childhood. Don’t you feel cooler already?

If you missed Sunday’s fronst-page piece in the Erie Times-News on Dave Zelina’s near-deadly day afield with his tree stand, be sure to check it out here. Zelina hopes he can help at least one person avoid the kind of fall he took from his stand; maybe that person is you.

Millcreek Township’s Andy Roseberry demonstrates the proper way to mount a tree stand and offers other safety tips in this video:

This week’s fishing report from Randy Leighton, deputy waterways conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission:

Bass angling along the lakeshore is still good although starting to slow down as the spawning period comes to a close. Walleye catches are starting to pick up although limits are not common yet. Most walleye are still being caught near shore in 20 feet to 35 feet of water. Small dipseys or even flatlining may be all you need this shallow. Dawn and dusk are the peak periods for walleye. It is often said that 10 percent of the anglers catch 90 percent of the fish and that 90 percent of the fish are caught before 10 a.m. Anglers are beginning to try the trenches with limited success. Perch fishing is getting better with limits coming in frequently. Typically, perch will turn on after the sun is up and mid-day can be the peak period when the sun is high in the sky. Just west of Walnut Creek in 47 feet of water has been a recent hot spot and off the point at Presque Isle. Current Lake Erie water temperature is 70 degrees.
