Erie’s Anthony Campanella caught a 35-pound 1-ounce king salmon that also netted him a $20,100 payout.

Campanella’s catch Aug. 26 won the Lake Ontario Counties Fall Derby while fishing Lake Ontario out of Olcott, N.Y. He hooked the salmon and Waterford’s Justin Nekoloff netted aboard a boat owned by Ian Cerpani of West Mifflin.

The derby ran Aug. 16 to Sept. 2. Campanella won $20,000 for first place and $100 for largest daily salmon.

The hot news for most 22-year-olds who recently graduated from college is the fact that they recently graduated from college, or maybe that there’s a job interview in the works.

Tim Benedict’s hot news is of a different variety.

The Warren County native is featured in Aug. 13 “Sports Illustrated” Faces in the Crowd for his victory in June at the Stihl Timbersports Collegiate Championship in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Participants from more than 60 colleges were whittle to a final six, who competed for the title in four chopping and sawing disciplines including the single buck, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop.

Benedict, a Pittsfield resident who in May graduated from Penn State with a degree in forestry, won a spot on the international rookie relay team at the Timbersports Series World Championship Sept. 7-8 in Lillehammer, Norway. He also secured a place as a pro in the 2013 Timbersports Series.

Here’s Benedict at the 2011 Collegiate championship, at which he finished third:

Cascade Creek through Frontier Park is getting a makeover. It’s a favorite hangout for young anglers during the first day of trout season and, nearer the mouth, for savvy steelhead anglers looking to slip away from the crowds after the big trout have made their way into Presque Isle Bay in the fall.
