Bruce Long, of Erie, checks in with the final Deer of the Day for 2012. Long shot his 10-point buck locally during archery season while in the field with his crossbow for the first time. The buck’s green score was 135 inches, and it had a 23-inch neck and weighed more than 200 pounds field dressed.

George King, of Girard, used his crossbow to shoot an 11-point trophy buck in East Springfield during archery season. The deer weighed 198 pounds field dressed and had a 21 1/4-inch outside spread.

Zach Lyons, 12, of Franklin, shot an 8-point buck Nov. 2 with his compound bow.

Lyons and his grandfather, Tom Young, were hunting on the edge of State Game Land 39 in Venango County.Young was in a tree stand and Lyons in a ground blind. He shot the deer from 15 yards after it responded to rattling.

Andrew Kozek, of Oil City, shot his 10-point Oct. 8 in Oil City. The buck had a 21-inch rack that featured 12.5-inch G2′s.

Kozek’s deer is among those already entered in the NWPA Outdoors Deer of the Year contest.

Enter your deer in the contest at goerie.com/deeroftheyear by Dec. 10 at 11:59 p.m. After a public voting period from Dec. 12-31, the Deer of the Year will be announced Jan. 6 in the Erie Times-News and on www.GoErie.com, along with an Editor’s Choice pick.

Deer legally harvested during any 2012-13 seasons are eligible. If you’ve already submitted a photo directly to the Times-News or to the GoErie Hunting and Fishing gallery, you’ll need to enter your photo again for contest purposes.

The contest is open only to individuals who are 18 years or older at time of entry. Entrants must have either harvested their deer in the Northwest Region or reside in the Northwest Region and have harvested their deer in Pennsylvania.

Bill Wiltse, of Erie, shot a lifetime buck with  his bow Nov. 5 in Crossingville, Crawford County. Wiltse’s non-typical 17-point had a 24.5-inch antler spread and weighed 172 pounds field dressed. Its left eye was light brown and its right eye dark brown. Wiltse said its preliminary score at Gander Mountain was 147.5.

Wiltse’s is among the trophies that could become the NWPA Outdoors 2012 Deer of the Year.

Matt Burns shot this trophy buck during archery season after it followed a doe out of a thicket in Meadville on what Burns called a picture-perfect morning Nov. 6.

Tom Decker, of Erie, shot a career-best 13-point drop-tine buck Nov. 10 at 7:45 a.m. near Wind Ridge, Pa., where he grew up. The buck was attracted to a rattling sequence and Decker shot him with his crossbow at 10 yards. The deer’s rack had a 19-inch inside spread and 21-inch outside spread and will have an estimated gross score of 150.
