Van Tassel Timberland Bait’s popular ice-fishing tournaments are scheduled to take place in February.

The Canadohta Lake tournament is scheduled for Feb. 9, with a Feb. 23 make-up date.

The Conneaut Lake tournament is scheduled for Feb. 23

Tickets are $15; register at Timberland Bait Shop, 36320 Dutch Hill Road, Union City.

Ben Lipiec and Brock Henderson won the eighth annual Channellock Bass Classic July 27 on Conneaut Lake.

The duo’s prize for winning the pro-am event was $1,250 for catching eight fish with a total weight of 15.82 pounds. Lipiec and Henderson also won an additional $330 for catching the heaviest fish (3.91 pounds).

Ernie Pate and Kevin Beachy finished second in the Classic, catching eight fish for 15.73 pounds and earning $750. The third-place prize of $500 went to Darren Potts and Jon Polley (15.63 pounds).

Danny Jones, of North East, and Phil Ness were fourth (14.96), earning $375. Steven Hughes and Lon Wilson, of Meadville, rounded out the top five at 14.28 pounds and winning $250.

The Classic, which benefits the United Way of Western Crawford County, raised a Classic record $21,000. The event also had its highest-ever turnout of 33 teams.

The annual Channellock Bass Classic Team Tournament is scheduled for July 27 at the Iroquois Boating & Fishing Club on Conneaut Lake.

The pro-am will feature 25 teams or pros and event sponsors. Amateur registration fee is $200

Takeoff is at 7 a.m. and free, public weigh-in is at 1 p.m. at the club dock. The top five teams will earn cash awards including $1,250 for first place.

The event benefits United Way of Western Crawford County.

VanTassel’s Timberland Bait’s annual ice fishing tournament Saturday at Canadohta Lake is scheduled to award as much as $500 to anglers who catch the longest fish in a classification.

The contest is scheduled to run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A tournament scheduled for Feb. 4 on Conneaut Lake was postponed to Feb. 25 because of insufficient ice.

In each event, the longest musky brings $500, the longest pike $325, and the longest perch and crappie $50 each.

Registration is $15 for each tournament at Timberland Bait, 36320 Dutch Hill Road, Union City. Registration also will be available the morning of the Conneaut Lake tournament.

An ice fishing contest scheduled for Saturday on Conneaut Lake has been postponed until Feb. 25.

VanTassel’s Timberland Bait’s annual event in Crawford County is scheduled to award as much as $500 to anglers who catch the longest fish in a classification.

Weather permitting, the rescheduled contest will run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting at Fireman’s Beach.

A tournament scheduled for Feb. 11 on Canadohta Lake has not been moved as of this time. The postponement date, if necessary, will be Feb. 18.

In each event, the longest musky brings $500, the longest pike $325, and the longest perch and crappie $50 each.

Set aside time July 29 to check weigh-ins at the seventh annual United Way Bass Classic Team Tournament on Conneaut Lake.

Organizers say they expect around 24 pros in the event, the same number as in 2010. Pros are paired with amateurs and will launch at 7 a.m. from the Iroquois Boating and Fishing Club dock. The public is invited to the weigh-in at 1 p.m. on the club’s lawn. The top five teams earn cash prizes.

Given the number of boaters and anglers who move between Lake Erie, other regional waters and Conneaut Lake, it was probably only a matter of time before zebra mussels turned up in the popular Crawford County body of water.

Regional Department of Environmental Protection staff found three zebra mussels during June 10 sampling, two in the lake and one in the Conneaut Outlet immediately below the lake. The DEP is asking that boaters and anglers do what they can to prevent the invasive species’ further spread.

“The small number suggests that the current population of zebra mussels is relatively small and may not yet be self-sustaining,” DEP Northwest Regional director Kelly Burch said. “We need the public’s help to keep the mussels from gaining a foothold in Conneaut Lake and to keep them from spreading to other area waterways.”
