It was a shame in September 2010 that there were no Erie-area college-aged anglers around to compete in the National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Division tournament that launched out of Presque Isle State Park.

A couple Gannon University students are out to fill that void.

Greg Evanoff and Destin DeMarion of the newly formed Gannon University Bassmasters will compete in the FLW College Fishing bass qualifier March 27 at Smith Mountain Lake, Va.

They’ll face off against teams from Penn State, Slippery Rock, Rochester Institute of Technology, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech, among other schools.

The top five finishers will advance to the FLW College Fishing Northern Regionals, which will be televised on Versus.

College anglers benefit from a program that helps to outfit them with boats, drivers and other needs, but they still have to make their way to events and otherwise pay their way. Want to help?
