The Lakefront Gobblers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will host a Women in the Outdoors event Feb. 2 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Chapman State Park in Clarendon, Warren County.

Hands-on classes will include introduction to turkey hunting, archery and ice fishing as well as several other activities. All equipment will be provided. Women of all levels of skill and experience – especially beginners – are encouraged to attend.

The cost is $55, which includes a NWTF membership and a one-year subscription to Turkey Country magazine. Current NWTF members pay $20.

The Sheffield Area Middle/High School Scholastic Youth Trap Team will be presented with a check for $20,000 by the National Wild Turkey Federation Saturday at 7 p.m. on the stage at the Sheffield Fireman’s Festival.

The Scholastic Shooting Trust is providing $20,000 endowments to 33 high school and collegiate shooting teams and organizations. The endowments were made possible by NWTF members through funds raised at NWTF events.

Regional director Walt Bingaman and regional biologist Kristen Giger will make the presentation to coaches Marie Kibbey and Joe Leichtenberger.

Yelp to your heart’s content March 17 at the Gander Mountain Turkey Classic, a National Wild Turkey Federation-sanctioned contest at the Erie store at 2088 Interchange Road.

The contest is a Grand National qualifier for open and friction winners, sponsored by Tamarack Turkey Talkers, Mossy Oak and Zink Calls. Cash or prizes will be given to the top three place-winners in each division, including $300 guaranteed to the open winner. All entry fees, minus $50, will be returned as prize money.

Registration fee is $25 for open and friction divisions and $15 for amateur and youth divisions. Open entrants must be 21 to qualify for the Grand National.

Only current NWTF members can call. Memberships can be purchased during on-site registration. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and calling at noon.
