“Trapper” Joe LaFont and “Trigger” Tommy Chauvin of the History Channel show “Swamp People” will be featured guests during the Erie Sport & Travel Expo March 1-3 at the Bayfront Convention Center.

LaFont and Chauvin will attend the show March 1 and 2, according to Erie Promotions & Expos Inc.

Daily admission is $7. Children 10 and under will be admitted free of charge

Zach Lyons, 12, of Franklin, shot an 8-point buck Nov. 2 with his compound bow.

Lyons and his grandfather, Tom Young, were hunting on the edge of State Game Land 39 in Venango County.Young was in a tree stand and Lyons in a ground blind. He shot the deer from 15 yards after it responded to rattling.

The hot news for most 22-year-olds who recently graduated from college is the fact that they recently graduated from college, or maybe that there’s a job interview in the works.

Tim Benedict’s hot news is of a different variety.

The Warren County native is featured in Aug. 13 “Sports Illustrated” Faces in the Crowd for his victory in June at the Stihl Timbersports Collegiate Championship in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Participants from more than 60 colleges were whittle to a final six, who competed for the title in four chopping and sawing disciplines including the single buck, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop.

Benedict, a Pittsfield resident who in May graduated from Penn State with a degree in forestry, won a spot on the international rookie relay team at the Timbersports Series World Championship Sept. 7-8 in Lillehammer, Norway. He also secured a place as a pro in the 2013 Timbersports Series.

Yelp to your heart’s content March 17 at the Gander Mountain Turkey Classic, a National Wild Turkey Federation-sanctioned contest at the Erie store at 2088 Interchange Road.

The contest is a Grand National qualifier for open and friction winners, sponsored by Tamarack Turkey Talkers, Mossy Oak and Zink Calls. Cash or prizes will be given to the top three place-winners in each division, including $300 guaranteed to the open winner. All entry fees, minus $50, will be returned as prize money.

Registration fee is $25 for open and friction divisions and $15 for amateur and youth divisions. Open entrants must be 21 to qualify for the Grand National.

Only current NWTF members can call. Memberships can be purchased during on-site registration. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and calling at noon.

Lake Erie Ultimate Angler has developed an active schedule of in-season and off-season classes and clinics. The latest: Fly-tying and a movie Jan. 9, 2010.

Bring your vice, materials and something to drink to the store at 3737 W. 12th St., Erie, for a session that will start at 1 p.m. and run through 3:30 p.m. The movie  “Soulfish,” starts at 1:30 p.m. Check out the trailer:

Erie will play host to Stren Series and National Guard FLW College Fishing bass tournaments in September 2010.

The Stren Series Northern Division tournament will take place Sept. 9-11, and the Northern Division college event will occur Sept. 11. Both events are part of circuits put on by FLW Outdoors, the world’s largest fishing tournament organization.

FLW Outdoors released its complete 2010 circuit schedules today.

Stren Series anglers are up-and-coming pros and co-anglers as well as established stars such as Union City’s Dave Lefebre, who will compete in the $100,000-to-win series championship Nov. 5-7 in Florence, Ala.

Full-time students at four-year colleges and universities that sponsor bass fishing clubs are eligible for no-fee entry into College Fishing tournaments. The first-year circuit awards scholarships as well as prizes to be split between winners’ fishing clubs and institutions. Boats are provided and the two-angler teams receive travel allowances.
