A reminder that the second annual Great Lakes Steelhead Expo is scheduled for Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 pm. at Rainbow Gardens, 3100 West Lake Road.

Admission to the Pennsylvania Steelhead Association-sponsored event is $15 per person, and free for those 15 and younger who are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

More than 40 vendors are scheduled to attend. Ox roast, hot dogs and beverages will be served throughout the day.

Three speakers also will appear:

April Vokey is an ambassador for Patagonia, the host of Buccaneers & Bones and a fishing guide on the Dean River in British Columbia. She also writes for several magazines including Fly Fusion Magazine. She is a world famous fly-tier specializing in Northwest patterns.

George Daniel, a Pennsylvania resident and member of the U.S. Fly Fishing team, is the author of “Dynamic Nymphing.” He will autograph his books after his presentation.

Mike Bleech, Erie Times-News outdoors writer, has published more than 5,000 articles in more than 100 publications since 1980.

The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will have its membership meeting Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 773, 4109 W 12th St.

Bob Hetz, nursery manager and treasurer for 3CU, will give an update on steelhead stocking and raceway cleanup. Waterways conservation officers from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will give stream updates.

Members and the public are invited to attend.

The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will have a general membership meeting Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 773, 4109 W. 12th St.

Bradford resident Steve Skvarka, a partner in the annual Kinzua Fly Fishing School, will speak about fighting and handling big trout and steelhead.

The public and new members are invited. The gathering is free of charge.

The second annual Great Lakes Steelhead Expo is scheduled for Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rainbow Gardens.

The Erie Sports Commission said the expo will be expanded to include seminars with fly fishing experts including April Vokey and George Daniel.

Vokey is an ambassador for Patagonia clothing, apparel and gear company, host of the Outdoor Channel’sBuccaneers & Bones” and a fly-tier specializing in northwestern steelhead patterns.

Daniel, a Potter County native, is a member of Fly Fishing Team USA, a two-time U.S. national champion and a lecturer and author.

The expo is put on by members of the Erie-based Pennsylvania Steelhead Association. More than 1,100 people are expected to travel to participate in the expo, which is scheduled to include more than 50 national and local vendors.

Entry fee is $15, and admission is free for children 15 and younger who are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will have its monthly meeting Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 773, 4109 W. 12th St.

Included on the agenda is an update on speakers, sponsors and vendors for the second annual Great Lakes Steelhead Expo Nov. 3, as well as a preview of the steelhead fishing season.

The meeting is free and open to the public and new members.

Two conservation experts will speak at the Pennsylvania Steelhead Association general membership meeting Wednesday.

The meeting is free and open to the public and new members as well. It will take place at 
7 p.m. at American Legion Post 773, 4109 W. 12th St.

Jane Menchyk, a land protection specialist with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and Dave Skellie, a coastal land use and economic specialist from PA Sea Grant, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the Lake Erie Region Conservancy are the guest speakers.

They have worked on several land conservation projects in the Erie area and will share their experiences and discuss the importance of strong local partnerships in their pursuit of protecting land for multiple conservation usages.

The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association‘s Tom Morrison Steelhead Catch-and-Release Tournament is scheduled for March 31 from 7a.m. to 4 p.m.

Want to participate? You have to become a PSA member, which costs just $15 for an individual. Tournament fishing is allowed only in Pennsylvania waters and will be done in two-person teams. Awards will be determined by length and by time caught. Plaques will be awarded to the top three catches.

The tournament is followed by the annual PSA Spring Run Banquet from 6-9 p.m. at American Legion Post 773, 4109 W. 12th St. A meet-and-greet from 5:30-6 p.m. will offer beverages and appetizers.

After a short business meeting and election of PSA officers and directors, a buffet style dinner will be served. Tournament winners’ plaque presentations follow dinner, as will raffles for fishing tackle, three fly-tying boards and gift certificates to are restaurants and businesses.
