Former Villa Maria star Sarah Grab has joined the coaching staff of the Gannon women’s basketball team, the university announced today.
The move completes the staff of new head coach Jim Brunelli, who replaced longtime Golden Knights coach Cleve Wright in June. Wright left to take the Miami (Ohio) head coaching position after the 2012-13 season.
Grab spent the previous five seasons as the head coach of the Corry girls basketball team. She led the Beavers to a pair of postseason appearances.
As a player, she led Villa Maria to appearances in the state championship game in 2001 and 2003. She was named 2003 District 10 Player of the Year and Erie Times-News Sportswoman of the Year, and claimed a spot on the all-state second team.
Grab then attended West Virginia Wesleyan, where she was four-year starter for the NCAA Division II school. She was a four-time West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-star and finished her career with 1,688 points. She also was an Academic All-American as a senior and was named the West Virginia Wesleyan Senior Woman Student-Athlete of the Year.
“I have always wanted to coach at the collegiate level and am honored to be given this opportunity,” Grab said. ”With Erie being my hometown, I cannot think of a better place to start my collegiate coaching career.”
