Notre Dame guard Kayla McBride, a Villa Maria graduate, is one of 25 players on the preseason list for the Wade Trophy, which is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year.
The award, is its 37th year, is presented by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport and the WBCA. The list is “composed of top NCAA Division I women’s basketball players who best embody Wade’s spirit from 18 different institutions and seven conferences.”
A committee of coaches, administrators and media compiled the list, taking into account game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
McBride, a 5-foot 11-inch senior guard, has helped the Fighting Irish to appearances in the Final Four each of the past two seasons. As a junior, she ranked second on the team a scoring average of 15.9 points per game. She also set a Notre Dame record with a 90 percent free-throw percentage.
