The Allegheny softball team capped an exciting NCAC tournament run with a 3-2 victory over Wittenberg Saturday.The win gave the Gators their fourth conference crown and their first since 2007.

Tournament MVP Caitlin Nealer led the fourth-seeded Gators by pitching every inning in four games. Nealer fanned 30 batters and allowed just four earned runs.

Steven Ramsdell

North East gradaute Steven Ramsdell pitched a no-hitter for the Allegheny baseball team  recently to earn several weekly awards.Read about Ramsdell in this week’s On Campus notebook.

Also featured are gymnast Marie Case, swimmer Kelsey Herbst, basketball players Lisa Mifsud and Shataya White and others.

Jim Johannes was the 1979 Division II champion in the 200-yard freestyle for Allegheny College, where he was a 23-time All-American. He was inducted into the college’s hall of fame in 1990.

Medaille: The two-time defending AMCC champion can get back into the race with unbeaten Behrend and La Roche with a road win. Sr. F Ron Malicki had 14 points and six rebounds and sr. F Joe Mogavero 13 and seven in the Dec. 1 home loss to the Lions.
Behrend: The Lions won 66-62 at Medaille Dec. 1. Sr. F Chris Saltzman had 28 points in the win, with so. C Russ Conley adding 16. The Lions shoot 51.2 percent from the floor (361-700) and 42.6 percent 3-pointers (114-265).

NCAC

Allegheny College (5-11, 2-6) at No. 1 Wooster (16-0, 7-0)
7:30 p.m., Timpken Gymnasium, Wooster, Ohio
Allegheny: The Gators gave Wooster all it wanted before falling 76-73 Dec. 8 at Allegheny. So. G Devone McLeod and jr. F Jamie Ness had 20 points each.
Wooster: Sr. G Ian Franks’ 3-pointer with one second left lifted Wooster in the win at Allegheny. Franks averages 18.4 ppg and 6.7 rpg.

Medaille: Fr. F Bianca Smiley (15.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and fr. G Joelle Pollak (13.3) lead the Mavericks, who have won four of the past five AMCC titles.
Behrend: The Lions were outscored 36-28 in the second half and outrebounded 42-32 in a 74-63 loss at Medaille Dec. 1. Behrend is 9-1 since the loss.

NCAC

Wooster (2-13, 0-5) at Allegheny College (9-6, 3-2)
7:30 p.m., Wise Center
Wooster: The Fighting Scots average 56.5 ppg and have lost 11-of-12.
Allegheny: Sr. G Jill Gregory (15.2 ppg, 24 steals), so. F Heide Goeller (14.9) and so. F Daryl Ford (6.9 rpg) lead the Gators, who have won two in a row.

College sports with a northwestern Pennsylvania slant:

• Congratulations to Edinboro women’s basketball coach Stan Swank, who earned his 400th career victory Monday when the Scots defeated Alderson-Broaddus 86-35 at McComb Fieldhouse.
• Swank’s big win came days after Mercyhurst College women’s hockey coach Michael Sisti won his 300th career game. He’s hoping for 301 tonight when his No. 4-ranked Lakers play host to No. 2 Cornell, the team that knocked them out of the 2010 Frozen Four.

Elsewhere:

• Andrew Church, a Penn State redshirt freshman, went 2-2 and brother David Church, a freshman, went 3-2 at the Floyd “Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Classic wrestling tournament.
• Gannon’s women’s swim team knocked off Division I Canisius 154.5-86.5 Saturday with help from McDowell graduates Jackie Rzymek and Sarah Anderson.
• Villa Maria graduate Kayla McBride and No. 11 Notre Dame take on No. 16 Georgetown tonight at 7 in a game that can be seen on CBS College Sports.
• General McLane graduate Kat Zimmerly, an Ohio Wesleyan senior, was named NCAC indoor track and field distance runner of the week.
• Pitt-Bradford senior Kyle Lewis, a North East graduate, earned a Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention award from the National Soccer Collegiate Athletic Association. He captained the Division II UPB men’s soccer team.
• Edinboro offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich will take a similar position at Shippensburg.
• Cathedral Prep graduate John Hill won the 200 freestyle for Dartmouth in its swim meet against Penn.
• Harbor Creek graduate Brittany DiSanti and McDowell graduate Kelsey Herbst were Pitt’s performers of the meet at Saturday’s Maryland quad.
• Allegheny College first baseman Matt Stahl is a d3baseball.com preseason Division III All-American.

Marcus Amos, 1990 Allegheny College graduate and former Tech Memorial student-athlete. A career .418 percent 3-point shooter, Handed out 216 assists during the 1988-89 season including a team-record 17 against Case Western Reserve in February 1989. He was second-team all-NCAC as a junior.
