Taking a look back at former Erie athletes who shined in college, here’s a look at Cathedral Prep graduate Bob Sanders when he starred at Iowa.

Sanders went on to star with the Indianapolis Colts where we won Super Bowl XLI and was the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Sanders is now with the San  Diego Chargers, who open the 2011 NFL season Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Feb. 22:

Kevin Darkus, top,won the 1982 NCAA Division I wrestling championship for Iowa State. He won silver at the 1985 world championships and was a two-time national champion. Darkus, a 1980 Cathedral Prep graduate and a PIAA champion in 1979 and 1980, was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1993.

Feb. 21:

Mike DeAnna took over the Edinboro wrestling program in 1984 and guided the Fighting Scots to five top-10 national finishes during a six-year stretch. He was the Division II coach of the year in 1986.

Rick Fessler played at Mercyhurst College in 1971-72, serving as team captain. The Cathedral Prep graduate and former McDowell girls basketball coach also is a former principal at Fort LeBoeuf Senior High School.

Jim Johannes was the 1979 Division II champion in the 200-yard freestyle for Allegheny College, where he was a 23-time All-American. He was inducted into the college’s hall of fame in 1990.
