“Our season was on the line. I told Adam Brown I was going to get this.” — Theo Hall.

Oct. 23, 2008: Mercyhurst 24, Edinboro 21

“Probably the toughest loss of my career.” — Trevor Harris

EDINBORO — Four years ago, Mercyhurst joined the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference where Edinboro was an established power.

“Edinboro has always been a big presence in the PSAC,” said Travis Rearick, who was a freshman quarterback at Mercyhurst in 2008.

That season, the Scots were led by one of the best quarterbacks to every play NCAA Division II — Trevor Harris. It was Edinboro’s best team under head coach Scott Browning.

“Offensively, we could be balanced,” said Harris, who was a junior in 2008. “We could run the football. We could throw the football and we could it from any different angle on the field.

“We really felt comfortable with everything we were doing. I think we were the best team in region my junior year. I really do, between us and Cal, in 2008.”

The Scots came into that game with one loss to California (Pa.), 35-31, and was looking to continue their playoff push against the underdog Lakers.

“That was our coming out party in the PSAC,” Rearick said. “It was a big opportunity for us.”

Having it on Thursday night was a plus for the Lakers.

Alex Romanias is 7-of-7 on field goals and 18-of-18 on PATs for Edinboro in his final season with the Scots./ETN file photo.

Alex Romanias was on the move this summer.

The Edinboro senior kicker tried to run two to three miles a day, but he also worked at the St. Clair Country Club golf course.

“I was moving around constantly throughout the day,” said Romanias, who is from Pittsburgh and attended Upper Saint Clair High School. “I tried to make sure everything I was doing was outdoors and staying active.”

As a result, Romanias lost 40 pounds and is kicking the ball better than he ever has at Edinboro. This season, the 6-foot, 2-inch, 205-pound Romanias is second in the PSAC in scoring for kickers with 39 points.

Romanias is 7-of-7 on field goals (40 long) and 18-of-18 on PATs. Last season, Romanias was 6-of-15 on field goals (38 long) and 20-of-21 on PATs.

“Last year wasn’t a great year for me,” Romanias said. “I was just trying to get a clean slate. A fresh start. I was feeling better about myself. In good condition. Everything is firing smoothly. Everything is smooth right now. I feels good.”

Romanias already has more points this season in four games than he had all of last season. So the big question is can Romanias stay perfect all season?

He’ll try.

“I’m always striving for perfection,” he said. “It doesn’t always  happen that way. All four years here, every field goal I go out for, I expect to make it. I keep my expectations high. So it’s great that it’s worked out for me so far.”

Trevor Harris led Edinboro to a game-winning drive to edge Gannon.

Four hours, 30 minutes long.

Two lightning delays.

One classic finish.

On Sept. 26, 2009, Edinboro pulled out 22-20 victory at Gannon on a last second, 17-yard field goal by senior Alex Romanias to cap one of the wildest college football games in recent memory.

“I thought we were fortunate to win the football game,” Edinboro coach Scott Browning said. “Very fortunate.”

Below are three stories from the Erie Times-News about the game.

Earlier this week, ETN sports reporter Duane Rankin asked players and coaches from both teams their memories of the game.

The first thing they remember is the weather.

The second? Trevor Harris.

First the weather.
