With OTAs (organized team activities) going on this week for the Tennessee Titans, area football fans surely will be monitoring the status of General McLane graduate and UConn star cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson.

The third-round pick of the Titans is generating buzz on an SB Nation blog, musiccitymiracles.com, which assessed that Wreh-Wilson’s size and speed will make him an effective defensive back on the outside. If he earns a starting job right away, or even if he is used in other packages, expect the 6-foot 1-inch, 195-pound Wreh-Wilson to draw the opponent’s biggest receiver.

The blog even breaks down the week-by-week chart of each team’s biggest target, including a Week 1 matchup with the Steelers that could see Wreh-Wilson covering veteran tight end Heath Miller.

A poll on the site even asks the question: Would you rather see Blidi Wreh-Wilson play inside and cover the slot, or play outside? As of early Wednesday, the response was overwhelmingly in favor of outside coverage, which is where Wreh-Wilson likely will have the biggest advantage.

As for Wreh-Wilson’s contract … Mike Keith, the radio play-by-play voice of the Titans, said in a recent blog post that the Titans’ rookie contract negotiations will be coming soon.

General McLane and University of Connecticut grad Blidi Wreh-Wilson is at the Tennessee Titans’ rookie minicamp this weekend.

He told a reporter that he’s getting his first exposure to the South.

“(Seeing a different part of the country is) something that I wanted to do,” Wreh-Wilson told titansonline.com. “I’ve never been part of the South ever, so it’s going to be a nice experience for me. Where I’m from (in Pennsylvania) is always Steelers, Browns and Bills, so you hear about that. Being part of the Titans, we’ve got a little bit of support in Pennsylvania now.”

Wreh-Wilson also talked about the conflict that some of his friends face when the Titans visit the Pittsburgh Steelers in the season opener. Read the rest of the titansonline.com notebook.

Wreh-Wilson is now listed with the No. 29 on the Titans’ online roster, but his player page has not been updated yet with his new head shot taken Thursday.

General McLane and University of Connecticut graduate Blidi Wreh-Wilson arrived in Nashville, Tenn., today to prepare for the Tennessee Titans’ rookie minicamp.

The three-day camp runs Friday through Sunday. Most rookie minicamps are glorified orientations, with the teams mentally preparing young players for the full minicamps. Unsigned free agent invitees use the three days as a tryout.

The Titans selected Wreh-Wilson in the third round of the NFL Draft with the 70th overall pick. He is expected to contend for playing time at cornerback as a rookie.

Check out a video from Titans minicamp that features an interview with Wreh-Wilson.

Former General McLane and University of Connecticut standout Blidi Wreh-Wilson was selected by the Tennessee Titans Friday with the 70th overall pick in the third round of the NFL Draft.

Read what the Titans’ website wrote about Wreh-Wilson and watch video of head coach Mike Munchak, college scout Richard Shelton and assistant secondary coach Steve Brown as they discuss the Wreh-Wilson pick.

A couple of notes about the Titans:

• Wreh-Wilson could be competing for playing time at cornerback against Tommie Campbell, who played for Edinboro University in 2007. Campbell is listed second on the depth chart at right cornerback behind Alterraun Verner, a four-year veteran from UCLA.

• A senior assistant coach of the Titans’ defense is Gregg Williams. Williams, who served as the Buffalo Bills’ head coach from 2001-03, was suspended last season after the NFL ruled that he participated in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty program.

General McLane and University of Connecticut graduate Blidi Wreh-Wilson was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the NFL Draft Friday night.

Wreh-Wilson was the 70th overall pick (No. 8 in the round) by the Titans, who likely were attracted to his size. At 6 feet 1 inch and 195 pounds, Wreh-Wilson has the height that makes him attractive for teams who are seeking a corner that can cover big receivers in the NFL.

He also could do well in press coverage, which makes him a good fit for a Titans team hoping to add a more blitz-heavy scheme. He could compete for a starting job in his rookie season.

Wreh-Wilson told Times-News reporter John Dudley he was excited to hear the news of his selection:

I’m relieved. I saw a lot of cornerbacks going off the board and I just wanted to get picked. I feel like people just don’t understand what it’s like to wait for your name to be called.

Wreh-Wilson is the first Erie County high school player picked in the draft since Cathedral Prep’s Bob Sanders in 2004.

General McLane and University of Connecticut graduate Blidi Wreh-Wilson will wait for a call today on the second day of the NFL Draft.

Wreh-Wilson was not selected in the first round Thursday, but he was not generally considered a likely opening-round pick. Most draft analysts had rated him as a second-round or third-round pick.

If that’s the case, Wreh-Wilson would be picked tonight, when NFL teams make their second- and third-round picks beginning at 6:30 p.m. The draft is televised by ESPN and NFL Network.

The 6-foot 1-inch, 195-pound cornerback has the height that makes him attractive for NFL teams who are seeking a corner that can cover big receivers in the NFL.

NFL analyst Charley Casserly predicted that the second round will be heavy on cornerback picks. He said up to 10 CBs could be picked in the round. That could include Wreh-Wilson.

Among the region’s three pro teams, the Browns picked linebacker Barkevious Mingo, the Bills selected quarterback E.J. Manuel and the Steelers took linebacker Jarvis Jones.

The three-day NFL Draft starts with Thursday night’s first-round coverage on ESPN.

Connecticut cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson, a General McLane graduate, could possibly hear his named called by commisssioner Roger Goodell Thursday night. It’s more likely, Wreh-Wilson, the area’s best bet to be drafted, will go in the second round or later. Check out the Wreh-Wilson story by Erie Times-News reporter John Dudley on draft day.

There are no shortage of links on draft projections and more for Wreh-Wilson. Here are a few of them:

The Bleacher Report provides a scouting report on Wreh-Wilson, including his strengths, weaknesses, intangibles and more.

Check out more scouting reports on Wreh-Wilson at CBSsports.com and NFL.com.

NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly lists Wreh-Wilson as an underrated prospect. Here’s what Casserly said of him:

Fast, physical, plays the zone very well. Good enough hips to show you some man-coverage, but they didn’t do a lot of man at UConn.

ESPNBoston.com lists Wreh-Wilson as a possible New England Patriots first-round pick.

The Pittsburgh Steelers also could be a good fit for Wreh-Wilson.

Update, 11:53 a.m.: The Times-News story today reported on how smart Wreh-Wilson is. This online report by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel says he scored a 33 on the Wonderlic test — tops among the premier defensive backs at the NFL Scouting Combine.

It’s been nine years since an Erie-area player was selected in the NFL Draft.

Connecticut and General McLane graduate Blidi Wreh-Wilson hopes to change that this week. The 6-foot 1-inch, 195-pound cornerback is projected as a first-, second-, or third-round selection.

Cathedral Prep and Iowa standout Bob Sanders was the last Erie-area athlete to have his named called in the draft. Sanders was picked by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round of the 2004 draft (44th overall).

McDowell graduate and Indiana (Pa.) offensive lineman Dan Matha (6 feet 7 inches, 315 pounds) also has a chance to be selected.

The area hopefuls were featured in the Erie Times-News Sunday. Also, check out more on Erie’s draft history here.

Blidi Wreh-Wilson is paying a visit to the Pittsburgh Steelers today.

The General McLane graduate and former Connecticut cornerback is a highly rated player going into the NFL Draft April 25-27. Several websites reported his visit to the Steelers.

Some draft analysts project Wreh-Wilson being picked as early as the late first round. Others predict he will be a second-round or third-round pick.

Wreh-Wilson has been in demand leading up to the draft since his performance in the NFL Combine and UConn’s pro day.

The 6-foot 1-inch 195-pound has received attention for his size and cover skills, two factors that NFL teams covet in a cornerback.

The online reports also noted that Wreh-Wilson will visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
