McDowell graduate Emma Swabb, a freshman at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference rookie of the year at the ODAC championships recently.

Swabb set Washington and Lee records in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 9.93 seconds) and 400 IM (4:40.25) during the meet. She also swam on the 200 freestyle relay, which set school and conference records with a time of 1:37.15. Swabb turned in a 24.61 split. She also was a member of the winning 400 medley relay team and placed second in the 200 breaststroke.

Swabb also earned two earlier honors. She was named ODAC swimmer of the week Dec. 2 after turning in five first-place finishes at the Randolph-Macon Invitational in Richmond, Va.

In addition, she earned a Scholar-Athlete Award from Washington and Lee after finishing with a 3.92 grade-point average in the fall. She is a political science and pre-law major.

Swabb was a 12-time District 10 Class AAA champion at McDowell.
