Erie’s Steve Piotrowicz returns to his hometown twice during the next five days as the second assistant to Indiana (Pa.) men’s basketball coach Joe Lombardi.
Piotrowicz is a Cathedral Prep grad who played a year at Penn State Behrend, then three seasons (2009-2012) as a point guard at Gannon. He will be on the bench Saturday when the unbeaten and No. 6 (Division II) Crimson Hawks visit Mercyhurst, where they have lost the past three seasons. On Wednesday, IUP visits the Hammermill Center, which is scheduled to reopen after severe fire damage to the structure after a high school game Dec. 23.
Piotrowicz is in his second season at IUP. He left Gannon after the 2012-13 first semester to resume his quest for a master’s degree at IUP and became a student assistant last January.
Though he is still completing his degree, this season he moved up to second assistant when top aide Chris Fife took the men’s job at Shippensburg, and the second assistant also left.
“Stevie P. is going to be a coach somewhere,” Fife said Wednesday after his young Red Raiders lost at Edinboro 84-81. “He knows everything about the game, and the job as an assistant.”
