Justin Caliste saw daylight once again.

Then he was down — and out.

The electrifying Gannon sophomore returner had already returned a punt for a touchdown in Saturday’s game against rival Mercyhurst that knotted it at 14-14 in the second quarter.

Then early in the third quarter with his team down 31-14, Caliste went down with an ankle injury and never returned. Gannon lost 38-29.

“I tried to make a cut and next thing you know, I felt my foot sideways on the ground,” he said. “Probably the worst pain I’ve felt due to my ankle.”

Edinboro did the right thing regarding Justin Caliste: Kick away from that young man.

The No. 19-ranked Scots (4-0, 1-0 PSAC West) didn’t allow Gannon’s impact true freshman to dictate their game today against the Knights (1-3, 0-1 PSAC West) and that helped them prevail, 27-0, at Gannon University Field.

Caliste, who has three returns for touchdowns with two of those coming in Gannon’s 47-0 win against Millersville last week, had just two punt returns for 25 yards and two kickoff returns for 36 yards.

Caliste’s longest return was 25 yards for kickoff and punt, respectively, but his most memorable return didn’t gain a yard. Chasing a punt from Ryan Genco laterally to the left sideline, Caliste caught it and was immediately nailed by senior linebacker Ryan Skelton, a General McLane graduate, for no gain at the Gannon 33.

Edinboro kicked away from Caliste after taking a 7-0 lead on the game’s opening drive. David Olszewski kicked the ball right. Trying to field it, Joe Sobucki touched the ball near the sideline. Edinboro almost recovered it at Gannon 2-yard line, but the ball barely touched the out-of-bounds line.

Other times, Edinboro had freshman Noah Ackerman, a Cathedral Prep graduate, pouch kick the ball short, which is why Gannon fullback Danny Giegerich had three kickoff returns. He gained 21 yards total.

Justin Caliste was almost out of breath Tuesday just talking about scoring three touchdowns in a span of two minutes and 52 seconds.

The Gannon true freshman return specialist scored on a 66-yard kickoff return, 70-yard reverse run and 85 yard punt return in a 47-0 win against Millersville on Saturday at Gannon University Field.

Caliste took 4 minutes, 14 seconds to recap it all.

“It was 7-0 up until that second quarter and our defense got a safety. So now I’m going in at kickoff return. It’s a safety so he had to punt it so I’m like, OK, he’s probably not going to punt it to me, but it came to me. While the ball was in the air, I’m surprised that he punted to me. When I catch it, I looked down field and there is just a window. My blockers did a good job. As soon as I caught the ball, it was there. I really didn’t have to do much. All I had to do was run straight and then beat the kicker. That was a touchdown.”

16-0 Gannon. 4:35 left in the half.
