Senior defensive end Keir Jeter, here with senior Ryan Skelton making the tackle against Gannon, has been a force for the Edinboro defense this season./ETN file photo.

It’s his final go at Edinboro. And Keir Jeter isn’t letting up.

The Edinboro senior was relentless all day in Edinboro’s 30-20 win against PSAC West rival Mercyhurst College today at Tullio Field.

“All my guys tell me, ‘Hey, we need something,’” Jeter said. “‘We need something’ so I just try to do my best whether it’s contain for someone else to make the play or just get in there and cause havoc.”

One of the best defensive players in the PSAC, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 237-pound defensive end out of Moon Township had team-high nine total tackles against the Lakers (3-4, 1-3).

He had six solo stops, four tackles for loss and two sacks for the Scots (5-2, 2-2).

“Whatever I can do to help us go forward, that’s what I need to do,” Jeter said.

Jeter came into the game fourth in the PSAC in tackles for loss with 10.5. He had 29 tackles, 4.5 sacks, tw0 forced fumbles, a blocked kick, interception and fumble recovery.

Jeter will look to help the Scots stay in the hunt for an PSAC West title as they play winless Lock Haven (0-6, 0-4) next week at Sox Harrison Stadium

Edinboro didn't allow Justin Caliste to celebrate a touchdown as he did three times last week against Millersville. The Scots limited him to 61 yards on four returns today./ETN file photo.

Edinboro did the right thing regarding Justin Caliste: Kick away from that young man.

The No. 19-ranked Scots (4-0, 1-0 PSAC West) didn’t allow Gannon’s impact true freshman to dictate their game today against the Knights (1-3, 0-1 PSAC West) and that helped them prevail, 27-0, at Gannon University Field.

Caliste, who has three returns for touchdowns with two of those coming in Gannon’s 47-0 win against Millersville last week, had just two punt returns for 25 yards and two kickoff returns for 36 yards.

Caliste’s longest return was 25 yards for kickoff and punt, respectively, but his most memorable return didn’t gain a yard. Chasing a punt from Ryan Genco laterally to the left sideline, Caliste caught it and was immediately nailed by senior linebacker Ryan Skelton, a General McLane graduate, for no gain at the Gannon 33.

Edinboro kicked away from Caliste after taking a 7-0 lead on the game’s opening drive. David Olszewski kicked the ball right. Trying to field it, Joe Sobucki touched the ball near the sideline. Edinboro almost recovered it at Gannon 2-yard line, but the ball barely touched the out-of-bounds line.

Other times, Edinboro had freshman Noah Ackerman, a Cathedral Prep graduate, pouch kick the ball short, which is why Gannon fullback Danny Giegerich had three kickoff returns. He gained 21 yards total.

Trevor Harris led Edinboro to a game-winning drive to edge Gannon.

Four hours, 30 minutes long.

Two lightning delays.

One classic finish.

On Sept. 26, 2009, Edinboro pulled out 22-20 victory at Gannon on a last second, 17-yard field goal by senior Alex Romanias to cap one of the wildest college football games in recent memory.

“I thought we were fortunate to win the football game,” Edinboro coach Scott Browning said. “Very fortunate.”

Below are three stories from the Erie Times-News about the game.

Lightning strikes twice for Edinboro
‘Boro’s win wet, weird and wild to the end
Loss to ‘Boro stings Gannon

Earlier this week, ETN sports reporter Duane Rankin asked players and coaches from both teams their memories of the game.

The first thing they remember is the weather.

The second? Trevor Harris.

First the weather.

Ryan Skelton's 21 tackles and four sacks rank first in the PSAC in those respective categories this season./ETN file photo.

Ryan Skelton is always around the ball, but you rarely see him until he’s making a tackle or sack.

That’s because he’s 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs 190 pounds.

“You can’t see me,” said Skelton with a laugh. “You can’t see me.”

Now Edinboro is listing Skelton as that height and weight. Check again, but the following figure about Skelton is 100 percent accurate:

Skelton leads the PSAC in sacks this season with four.

The General McLane graduate has had two sacks in each of his first two games this season for the 2-0 Scots, who beat Merrimack, 49-19, last week.

Edinboro will try look to stay unbeaten as it takes on PSAC East foe Cheyney (1-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sox Harrison Stadium.

“Ryan Skelton is a good a football player as there is,” Edinboro coach Scott Browning said this week. “He’s an impact. He really is. The film doesn’t lie.”

With Skelton being so short, he tends to hide in between the defensive linemen, but has great timing in terms of when he blitzes.

A starter at linebacker, Edinboro senior Ryan Skelton is the top returning tackler for the Scots. His 75 total stops last season was second to his older brother, Dan.

So Erie Times-News reporter Duane Rankin caught up with the General McLane graduate and talked with him about a variety of topics that included what actor would play him in a movie.

The Scots open the 2011 season today at 1:30 p.m. at home against West Liberty (W.Va.). Edinboro is coming off a 7-4 season.
