EDINBORO — Four years ago, Mercyhurst joined the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference where Edinboro was an established power.

“Edinboro has always been a big presence in the PSAC,” said Travis Rearick, who was a freshman quarterback at Mercyhurst in 2008.

That season, the Scots were led by one of the best quarterbacks to every play NCAA Division II — Trevor Harris. It was Edinboro’s best team under head coach Scott Browning.

“Offensively, we could be balanced,” said Harris, who was a junior in 2008. “We could run the football. We could throw the football and we could it from any different angle on the field.

“We really felt comfortable with everything we were doing. I think we were the best team in region my junior year. I really do, between us and Cal, in 2008.”

The Scots came into that game with one loss to California (Pa.), 35-31, and was looking to continue their playoff push against the underdog Lakers.

“That was our coming out party in the PSAC,” Rearick said. “It was a big opportunity for us.”

Having it on Thursday night was a plus for the Lakers.

Taking advice from his older brother, Edinboro junior Cody Harris has been healthier this season./Josh Barber

Cody Harris wasn’t thinking about his health when he lowered the shoulder on a Gannon defender in last week’s PSAC West win against the rival Knights.

“I’m not sure if it was a wise decision,” he said. “Gannon hits pretty hard. Maybe I got lucky. I don’t know. I just put shoulder down and it turned out my way. I probably should get down.”

However, the junior quarterback has taken heed to the advice of his big brother and it has helped him stay healthier this season.

“While training in the offseason, I kind of listened to my older brother Trevor,” said Harris about his older brother, who while at Edinboro became of best college quarterbacks in NCAA Division II. He is now playing in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts.

Last season, Harris played through his share of nagging injuries, but looks to have more energy and spirit at this point in the season.

Thanks big bro.

“The way he trained and the way he trained Jacksonville (while in camp with the Jaguars in 2010), Orlando and all the places he’s been,” Harris said. ” Got me on the right track. Just doing the right things. Not always lifting heavy, but lifting to be healthy. Lifting to stay healthy and strengthen the muscles.”

Gannon University heads into Saturday’s PSAC West rivalry game at Edinboro University with an 0-6 record against the Fighting Scots (2-2, 1-1).

The Knights (1-4, 0-2) have dropped four straight games to Edinboro since joining the PSAC. Check out players and coaches from both sides talk about the upcoming showdown at Sox Harrison Stadium.

Erie Times-News reporter Duane Rankin caught up with Trevor and Cody Harris to discuss a variety of topics. From Waldo, Ohio, Trevor Harris was a star quarterback at Edinboro while Cody Harris is a starting sophomore quarterback for the Scots.

Trevor Harris led Edinboro to a game-winning drive to edge Gannon.

Four hours, 30 minutes long.

Two lightning delays.

One classic finish.

On Sept. 26, 2009, Edinboro pulled out 22-20 victory at Gannon on a last second, 17-yard field goal by senior Alex Romanias to cap one of the wildest college football games in recent memory.

“I thought we were fortunate to win the football game,” Edinboro coach Scott Browning said. “Very fortunate.”

At 6-foot-4, 247 pounds, Shawn Walker looks like an NFL tight end.

Coming out of General McLane High, he was recruited like he could become one as several Division I schools wanted him. Walker was an all-state player in two sports when the Lancers won the 2006 PIAA Class AAA football title and 2007 PIAA Class AAA basketball title.

However, Walker hasn’t put up the kind of numbers you’d figure  someone of his talent would. Heading into his junior season this year, Walker had just 32 catches for 336 yards and four touchdowns, but Edinboro coach Scott Browning said Walker is having a “fine career.”

Last season, Walker was a second-team All-PSAC West pick, but didn’t catch a touchdown. He didn’t catch a pass in this season’s opener, but had four for 51 yards last week against Merrimack.

Browning said he has three tight ends in Walker, redshirt freshman Blaine Iskula (6-5, 255) and junior Seth Hembree (6-7, 250) and no one has become the” front runner.” Iskula has four catches for 16 yards while Hembree has two catches for 35 yards this season.

Browning then talked about the team having talent at the other skilled positions, but someone of Walker’s talent should be catching more passes even if there is a bunch of talent around him right?

So how does Walker feel about all this? Erie Times-News sports reporter Duane Rankin visited him at Edinboro earlier this week to find out as Scots (2-0) play PSAC East foe Cheyney (1-1) at home Saturday at 1 p.m.
