Celebrate a swimmable bay

Karen Barringer, Thad Urban (principal of Iroquois Elementary School) and Bob North swam across Presque Isle Bay.

Check out this story I wrote for Lake Erie LifeStyle magazine (insert in Sunday’s Erie Times-News) about the annual Bay Swim.

This was a fun story to write and everyone I interviewed — from the Wassell family who swam it together to the elementary school teacher who did it on a dare to the legendary Kuzma’s (who still swim competitively in their 70s!) — was a blast to talk to. They were so enthusiastic that they almost had me talked into it. I said almost.

Swim Stroke Improvement Class @ Y  starts May 20

On a related note, the Eastside YMCA is offering a swim stroke improvement class for adults this summer. The class runs for six weeks, twice a week, and the instructor will focus on helping you improve your stroke so you can swim more efficiently. Classes meet on Mondays & Wednesdays at 6 p.m. for one hour beginning May 20 (through June 20). Cost is $125 for members. Sign ups (for members) begin May 1. Cost is $140 for nonmembers and nonmember registrations starts a week later. Call the Eastside Y at 899-5122 for more info.
