Colleges in the running (and swim) this weekend

OK…brace yourselves. There is not just one but…TWO…count ‘em TWO races this weekend that are not at the peninsula. (Gasp!).

Linked by Pink 5K

The Linked by Pink 5K starts at the Gannon University Carneval Athletic Pavilion on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Day of race registration is $20 and all race proceeds benefit the local breast cancer organization Linked by Pink who work to raise breast cancer awareness and support for research and treatment.

The cool thing about this race is that the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Gannon University and the Sportsmedicine Student Association of Mercyhurst College (rival schools) are working together to put on this race.

Now, I know you might be saying, gee, Heather, where is the Gannon University Carneval Athletic Pavilion? And, um, I don’t know, I’m totally Team Behrend now.

Check out our cool team Quad* shirts (Yeah, baby)!

Three (cross-country) Miles for Smiles

Speaking of Behrend, the college’s Omicron Delta Kappa (honors society) is putting on Three Miles For Smiles — a 5k cross-country race  (grass, woods, hills, mud are all possible — don’t say I didn’t warn you!) at the college on Sunday at 10 a.m.

The race course is still being determined, but will start near the Behrend baseball fields. Park in the main Erie lot and look for the concession stand/registration table near the dugouts.

The entry fee is $20 and it is a benefit for Operation Smile, an international children’s charity that provides free reconstructive surgeries for kids born with cleft lip or palate.

Here is the shirt design:

Get your swim on Sunday*

The first event—the swim—of the 30th annual Quad Games will be held starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday at McComb Fieldhouse at Edinboro University.  In keeping with his every-ten-year tradition, “Quadfather” Craig Latimer himself will be participating in the 30th annual games.  So, if the Quadfather can both organize the games AND participate in them, what’s your excuse? It’s just four lengths!

* How cool is it that ALL the local colleges are involved in a kick-butt sporting event this weekend?

* Are you doing the Quad? Do you covet my Team Behrend shirt, or what?

* Do you have any clue where the heck Gannon’s Carneval Athletic Pavilion is?
