Just Write 8 ~ Peer pressure is not always bad

After running two marathons and slamming into “the wall” both times, I said I’d never do another. I decided it just wasn’t my distance and was more than content to stick to half marathons for the rest of my running life.

But, then Karen Manganaro posted a link to the PA Grand Canyon marathon — an inaugural event to be held July 28 this year. I’ve always wanted to visit the PA Grand Canyon and Dan and I swore we were going to make there this summer hell or high water, so this race seemed like a sign.

I clicked over and, sure enough, race organizers are promising stunning views as the course winds along the rim in Colton Point State Park, overlooking the PA Grand Canyon.

What they are not offering is a half marathon distance.

Crap.

So it’s all or nothing. And I’m left contemplating how much I really want to see those views. If I want them bad enough to do 20-mile training runs in late June. If I want to expose myself to that “wall” again. If I want to pay nearly $100 to run a race (and a couple hundred more for accommodations and entry for the husband). If I want to race for four hours. If I want to risk injury. If I want to train for a marathon at the same time I’ll be training for the Quad bike race and the 1-mile Bay Swim.

During our Saturday group run, I told a friend about the race. She loves the Wellsboro area. She loves marathons (and then some). She’s already booked a room. She wants to know if I’m in.

And, I probably am because I’ve always been a sucker for peer pressure. If all my friends jumped off a cliff, you bet your ass I would. In fact, I have. Several years ago a group of running friends and Dan and I traveled to Mexico and went on an excursion where the guide told us we could jump off a cliff into the water far below. It only took one crazy one to do it first, then we all followed like lemmings. And, it was awesome. One of the top 20 most memorable moments in my life.

Stairs are for sissies; we climbed over that rope and jumped off the cliff.

Things aren’t so scary when you do them with friends.

So thanks to my friends, I’m probably going to be jumping off a couple cliffs this year — the Bay Swim in June (my first, if I do it) and the PA Grand Canyon marathon in July.

Maybe what I need are some lazier friends, eh?

And now you have piqued my interest with your peer pressure :)
