LAKERS UPDATE: Mercyhurst men routed at Air Force

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Mercyhurst men’s hockey team chose the worst time to produce their worst performance in four years.

Air Force handed the Lakers an 8-0 loss in front of 2,816 at Cadet Ice Arena Friday night in the opener of a key two-game Atlantic Hockey Association series.

The lopsided defeat dropped Mercyhurst (16-13-4, 13-7-4) into a fourth-place tie with Bentley in the standings with three games left in the regular season.

The Lakers (30 points) have a one-point lead over fifth-place Holy Cross. Robert Morris is another point back. The top four teams earn a bye in the first-round of the AHA playoffs, which begin in two weeks.

Mercyhurst suffered its worst loss since a 7-0 loss to Air Force on Feb. 9, 2008.

Air Force (16-7-7, 14-4-6) extended its unbeaten streak to nine games. The Falcons (34 points) hold a two-point lead over second-place Rochester Institute of Technology entering today’s 9:05 game against Mercyhurst. The Falcons scored five goals on 21 shots in the first two periods against sophomore goaltender Jordan Tibbett. Freshman Jimmy Sarjeant allowed three goals on 14 shots in the third period.
