LAKERS UPDATE: Lakers fall to Holy Cross 3-1; Game 3 Sunday

The Holy Cross men’s hockey team wasn’t ready to end their collegiate careers.

The Crusaders staved off elimination with a hard-fought 3-1 win against Mercyhurst in Game 2 of their Atlantic Hockey Association best-of-three quarterfinal series Saturday night at Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Behind sophomore forward Adam Schmidt’s two goals, including an empty-netter that iced the victory with 17 seconds left, the Crusaders (20-14-4) forced a decisive Game 3 today at 7:05 p.m. at Mercyhurst.

Schmidt fired a wrist shot off the crossbar and into the net – his 17th goal of the season – with 5:42 left in the period. Schmidt, who scored into an empty net in the game’s final seconds, is tied for fourth in NCAA Division I with 18 goals. Then 1:17 later, senior forward Andrew Cox turned a steal at the Crusaders’ blue line into a goal on a short-handed breakaway for a 2-0 lead.

The Lakers (19-15-4) switched from white helmets to green helmets for the third period in hopes of creating an offensive spark.

The change seemed to work, as Mercyhurst sliced the Crusaders’ lead in half on freshman defenseman Tyler Shiplo’s shot from the point 7:41 into the period. The Lakers also had their share of scoring chances down the stretch. But they failed to capitalize on any of them.

Schmidt’s final shot didn’t miss the empty net moments later.
