The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League have announced that Assistant General Manager of Administration Shawn Waskiewicz will leave the team at the conclusion of the season. His resignation will be effective on March 17.
Waskiewicz will take over as Executive Director for the Flagship Niagara League and U.S.S. Brig Niagara, Erie’s famous landmark that played a vital role in the War of 1812.
Waskiewicz has been involved as a member of Erie’s sports administration community for over a decade. Following his graduation from Edinboro University, the Harborcreek native joined the Erie SeaWolves where he was the team’s Director of Group Sales. In 2000, he joined the Otters organization, working in several capacities including corporate and ticket sales, community relations and marketing.
Prior to the 2005 season, Waskiewicz joined Comcast Spectacor and served as an Account Executive with the Philadelphia Flyers. Later that season, he was promoted to Director of Sales for the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League.
He returned in May 2007 to the Otters to accept the position of Director of Sales and was promoted to his current position in September 2008. In June, he became the seventh person in team history to be awarded the Franchise Cup, which is given to those people that have shown great commitment and loyalty to the Otters family.
“After spending 14-plus years working in the sports industry, it’s time for a new challenge,” Waskiewicz said. “I’m excited about the things happening with the U.S.S. Brig Niagara and Flagship Niagara League. I appreciate the opportunity with Mr. Bassin and the Erie Otters organization. I’ll never forget our special season in 2001-02, winning an OHL Championship.”
“We have always been proud of anyone in our organization when they’ve had an opportunity to advance,” Otters General Manager Sherry Bassin said. “Shawn had an opportunity to advance in the community that he loves, and without question, it will be a major loss for the Otters. However, we’re very excited for his future. He will be hard to replace, but we have never stood in the prevention of advancement. He will always be an Otter.”
