KREUZLINGEN, Switzerland – Vicki Bendus and Bailey Bram will return Erie with gold medals.

Mercyhurst College’s high-scoring duo led their native Canada’s National Under-22 team to a 6-0 win over Sweden in the championship game of the MLP Cup on Saturday.

Bram, a junior forward, had a goal and three assists. She assisted on three goals in Canada’s decisive five-goal first period. Then she capped the scoring with a second-period goal. Bendus, a senior forward and reigning national player of the year, scored a goal in the opening period.

They finished the tournament tied for the overall scoring lead with three goals and nine points. Former Laker Johanna Malmstrom had one point and two penalty minutes in four games for Sweden.

CLARENVILLE, N.L. – Seniors Vicki Bendus and Meghan Agosta of the No. 3/4 Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team combined for seven points as the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team defeated Sweden, 8-1, at the Four Nations Cup Wednesday evening.
Bendus scored a goal and added three assists while Agosta matched her assist total with three of her own, helping the Canadians bounce back from a 3-2 loss to the United States on Tuesday evening. Both players made their presence known in the first period, as Bendus dished out the primary assist on the game’s first goal by Natalie Spooner and Agosta added the secondary helper on the eventual game-winner by Haley Irwin with 1:33 left in the frame.
Bendus, playing in just her second game as a member of the Canadian National Team, scored her first goal with 3:05 elapsed in the second period, less than a minute after Agosta helped out Rebecca Johnston‘s score at the 2:26 mark.
Canada controlled play by holding leads of 2-1 after the first period and 5-1 after the second. Sweden, which featured 2010 Mercyhurst graduate Johanna Malmstrom, was outshot 58-22 for the game. The Canadians will look for their second win of the tournament when they face Finland on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Clarenville Events Centre.
