LAS VEGAS (June 23) — Washington Capitals left wing Alex
Ovechkin
, who becomes the first player in National Hockey League history
voted a First Team All-Star in each of his first five seasons, highlights
the players named to the league’s First and Second All-Star Teams for
2009-10.

Ovechkin surpassed the mark of Montreal Canadiens Hall of Fame
goaltender Bill Durnan, named in his first four seasons from 1943-44
through 1946-47. Joining Ovechkin on the First Team is Capitals teammate
Mike Green, who earned his second consecutive berth on defense.

Each of the remaining First Team players is a first-time
selection, including two Chicago Blackhawks — defenseman Duncan Keith and
right wing Patrick Kane. The last time the Blackhawks boasted as many was
in 1992-93 (goaltender Ed Belfour, defenseman Chris Chelios). Other First
Team honorees are goaltender Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres and center
Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks.

Among those named to the Second Team is Canucks left wing Daniel
Sedin
, marking the first time in 36 years that brothers had earned berths
on post-season All-Star Teams in the same year. In 1973-74, Boston center
Phil Esposito earned First Team honors and Chicago goaltender Tony
Esposito
was voted to the Second Team.

Joining Daniel Sedin on the Second Team: goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov
of the Phoenix Coyotes, defensemen Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings
and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, center Sidney Crosby of the
Pittsburgh Penguins and right wing Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay
Lightning
.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of
the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular
season.

Left wing Brett Appio played the second half of the 2009-10 OHL season with a painful hip injury that required surgery after the season.

Sherry Bassin, Otters managing partner and general manager, knew of Appio’s injury before acquiring him from Sarnia on Jan. 10 in the trade that also brought then-overage goaltender Adam Courchaine to the team.

“We didn’t know it was that serious,” Bassin said. When doctors said Appio couldn’t further damage his hip, club officials allowed him to play. “He played through every bit of it,” Bassin said. “That really tells you a lot about him.” Appio had three goals, six points and 54 penalty minutes in 25 games with the team.

* Hard to believe: Stan Bowman, general manager of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, called right wing Anthony Luciani two weeks ago to invite him to rookie camp next month.

Anthony Luciani (Contributed/Erie Otters)

Luciani was on a bike ride when his father, John, answered the telephone. “My Dad was chasing me in his car,” Luciani said. “He said, ‘Go home. A general manager called.’ I didn’t believe him.”

Another phone call proved it was true. “Pretty neat,” said Luciani, who also has received interest from the Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild after totaling 38 goals and 68 points in 68 games this past season. He could still be selected in next week’s NHL Entry Draft.

Fellow winger Shawn Szydlowski also will attend the Blackhawks’ rookie camp. Bassin hinted at the possibility during the Otters’ mini-camp in Goderich, Ontario, two weeks ago. Bassin told him last weekend that the invitation was official.

* No decision yet: Defenseman Paul Cianfrini, who ended his OHL career this past season, remains undecided on his future. He hasn’t ruled out professional or college hockey, although he has garnered far more interest from Canadian universities, primarily in Ontario, than from pro clubs.

“I’ll be doing one of the two,” he said. “I just don’t know what.”

CALGARY, Alberta – Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, announced on Tuesday that George Burnett, head coach and general manager of the Ontario Hockey League’s Belleville Bulls, will be the head coach of Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team for the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, scheduled for August 10-14 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Burnett will be joined behind Canada’s bench by assistant coaches Ron Choules (head coach of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan) and Jim Hiller (head coach of the Western Hockey League’s Tri-City Americans) for the tournament, which Canada has won in each of the last two years and five of the last seven.

Burnett, 48, will make his second appearance as the team’s head coach, having led Canada to a gold medal at the 2001 Six Nations Cup in the Czech Republic. He was most recently an assistant coach with Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team at the 2010 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Belarus, where Canada finished seventh.

The Port, Perry, Ont., native has spent 13 seasons as a head coach in the OHL, six with the Bulls. He has also been the head coach for Niagara Falls, Guelph and Oshawa, winning the OHL coach of the year award twice – 1990-91 and 1991-92. Burnett coached the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers for 35 games during the 1994-95 season and led Edmonton’s American Hockey League farm team, the Cape Breton Oilers, to a Calder Cup championship in 1993.

“It is always a tremendous privilege and honour to represent Canada on the international stage,” said Burnett. “Being with Team Canada past has always been a tremendous experience and I am anxious to get started with the coaching staff to get our plan in place.”

Hiller, 41, just completed his first season as head coach of the Americans, leading the team to its first-ever appearance in the WHL final.

Prior to arriving in Tri-City, the Nelson, British Columbia, native was the first head coach of the WHL’s Chilliwack Bruins from 2006-09, leading the team to a playoff berth in its expansion season, and spent two seasons (2004-06) as head coach of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the British Columbia Hockey League, leading the team to a 43-12-2 record in 2005-06.

Hiller, a 10th-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 1989, played 63 NHL games with L.A., Detroit and the New York Rangers, and finished his career in Germany and Italy before retiring in 2002 and joining Tri-City as an assistant coach.

Choules, 46, will be behind the Team Canada bench for the first time this summer, having just completed his second full season as head coach of the Titan. A scout with Acadie-Bathurst for three years before becoming head coach, Choules served simultaneously as head coach and general manager of the Kahnawake Condors of the Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec, where he was a finalist for the league’s coach of the year award in 2006-07. A 12th-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1983, Choules played four seasons in the QMJHL with Hull, Trois-Rivières and Quebec from 1981-84 and was named to the league’s second all-star team in 1982-83.

“The under-18 program plays a vital role in the development of Canada’s top young players, both on and off the ice, and we are extremely confident the three coaches we are naming today will continue to assist in that development,” said Brad Pascall, Hockey Canada’s senior director of national men’s teams. “We look forward to working with the coaches this summer as we aim for a third-consecutive gold medal in Europe.”

Hockey Canada will announce details for the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team’s selection camp in the near future, including the players that will be invited to camp.
