What to expect: Mercyhurst returns to Rochester for the conference’s final four for the third straight season. The Lakers lost to Air Force 5-2 in the 2012 semifinals. They followed a 4-1 semifinal win over Connecticut in the 2013 semifinals with a 7-2 loss to Canisius in the championship game. … The top-seeded Lakers reached the semifinals with a two-game sweep of No. 8 Holy Cross, which included their first come-from-behind win of the season and first overtime victory since December 2012, in the best-of-three quarterfinal series last weekend at Mercyhurst Ice Center. … The winner of today’s game meets the winner of the second semifinal between No. 5 Robert Morris and sixth-seeded Niagara in Saturday’s 7:05 p.m. championship game. … The Lakers are unbeaten in their last eight games (6-0-2). … They lost two of three games to Canisius in the regular season. Mercyhurst junior F Matt Zay has earned Atlantic Hockey Association player of the week honors after totaling two goals and three assists in a split of a home-and-home series with Canisius this past weekend.
He had the tying goal with less than 3 minutes left, and assisted on junior F Daniel Bahntge‘s go-ahead goal with 57 seconds left, in a 3-1 win Friday in Buffalo. Zay tied a season high with 3 points (goal, 2 assists) in a 7-4 loss Saturday at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
He leads the Lakers with 38 points (15 goals, 23 assists) this season, and needs 9 points to become the 17th player in the program’s NCAA Division I history to reach 100 career points.

Matt Zay and Kyle Cook had a goal and assist apiece to lead the Mercyhurst men to a 7-1 Atlantic Hockey Association win against Sacred Heart on Friday night at Mercyhurst Ice Center. Head coach Rick Gotkin‘s team is above .500 for the first time this season at 8-7-1, and remains atop the conference at 6-1-0.
Meanwhile, the Mercyhurst women routed Penn State 7-0 in a College Hockey America game at MIC Friday afternoon behind Christine Bestland‘s hat trick and assist. The senior forward and captain needs one point to become the fifth player in program history to reach the 200-point mark. She would join the following group of former Lakers stars:
