Andre Burakovsky

MALMO, Sweden – Sweden is on a roll at the IIHF World Junior Championship. Erie Otters teammates Andre Burakovsky and Oscar Dansk are big reasons why.
Burakovsky had two assists, while Dansk stopped all 18 shots he faced, in a 6-0 quarterfinal win against Slovakia today that moved unbeaten Sweden (5-0-0) into the semifinals. Sweden faces Russia (3-2-0), a 5-3 winner against the United States (3-2-0), on Saturday at 9 a.m.
The other semifinal on Saturday features Canada (4-0-1), which has the Otters’ duo of center Connor McDavid and Adam Pelech, meeting Finland (3-1-1) at 1 p.m. The winners will play for the gold medal Sunday at 1 p.m. The losers will play in the bronze-medal game Sunday at 9 a.m. NHL Network will televise all four games.
Burakovsky has three goals and seven points in five games. Dansk has a 4-0-0 record,

1.75 goals-against average, .927 save percentage and one shutout in four games.
* Canada 4, Switzerland 1: McDavid and Pelech were held without a point, but Canada advanced to the semifinals for the 16th straight time with a two-goal third period that broke open a one-goal game today and clinched a matchup with Finland, a 5-3 winner against Czech Republic (2-3-0). Curtis Lazar scored 4 minutes, 11 seconds into the third to open a 3-1 lead. Derrick Pouliot’s goal with capped the win with 6:11 left capped the victory.
McDavid has a goal and four points in five games. Pelech has no points and an even plus-minus rating.

There’s added local flavor on the ice in Helsinki, Finland today at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Erie native Keith Kaval is officiating today’s game between host Finland and Slovakia. Former Erie Otters goaltender Jaroslav Janus is on Slovakia’s roster, but he’s scratched for this game. He has an 0-2 record, 3.00 goals-against average and .875 save percentage in two games in the tournament.
Former Otters captain Ryan O’Reilly, a forward with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, is playing for Canada. He has a goal and three points in seven games.
UPDATE: Kaval will travel to Stockholm, Sweden to officiate in the tournament’s medal round.

Erie Otters center Connor McDavid leads all players with five goals, six assists and 11 points in four games for unbeaten Canada in the IIHF U18 World Championship in Sochi, Russia. McDavid, 16, capped his dominant performance in the preliminary round with a hat trick in a 6-0 win against Sweden Tuesday. Canada also beat Slovakia 4-1 last Thursday, Germany 3-1 Saturday and Switzerland 10-1 Monday to win Group B with a 4-0 record and secure a quarterfinal matchup with Czech Republic Thursday. The Czechs finished fourth in Group A with a 1-3 record. The United States finished third in Group A with a 2-2 record, and will meet Group B runner-up Sweden (3-1) in a quarterfinal.
