The No. 3 Lakers outscored St. Cloud State 15-2 this weekend in its season-opening series at the Mercyhurst Ice Center, including a 6-1 win Saturday afternoon. Mercyhurst’s top three players from last season – Jesse Scanzano, Bailey Bram and Vicki Bendus – each scored in the first period for a 3-0 lead. Kelley Steadman added a fourth goal with just over a minute remaining.
The Lakers outshot their opponents 31-10 through two periods, making life miserable for Huskies goaltender Tayler VanDenakker.
Meghan Agosta scored unassisted at 12:36 of the second period to make it 5-0 before St. Cloud’s Kylie Lane managed to get her team on the board 4 minutes later. But 20 seconds after Lane scored, Mercyhurst’s Christie Cicero answered with her second goal of the season. Goaltender Hillary Pattenden stopped 19 of 20 shots for her second win, as the Lakers improved to 2-0-0 in front of 516 fans.
St. Cloud State, a Western Collegiate Hockey Association member, fell to 0-2-0.
