Windsor, Ontario – The Ontario Hockey League in association with the Windsor Spitfires hockey club held a media conference Sunday to announce John Kurtz of the Sudbury Wolves as the second ever recipient of the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy.

Kurtz, a 20-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, played four OHL seasons beginning in 2006-07 as a member of the Windsor Spitfires, where he was teammates with Renaud.  He played his final three seasons with the Wolves and served as team captain the last two years.  Kurtz continued to wear Renaud’s No. 18 sticker on his own helmet throughout his OHL career.

Kurtz was unanimously chosen by a selection committee as the OHL team captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, with a passion and dedication to the game of hockey and his community that Mickey demonstrated.  The selection committee consisted of a media panel of four, representing each of the four OHL divisions.

“When I came into the OHL in Windsor, Mickey was the first guy to make me feel comfortable,” said Kurtz. “As a younger guy I really looked up to him and wanted to pattern my game after him.  I was really happy when I saw this award presented last year, and am really honoured to win it this year.”

Kurtz was also the Wolves’ nominee for the Dan Snyder Memorial Award as OHL humanitarian of the year.  He attended many fundraising events on behalf of the Wolves’ organization and volunteered at community schools and at a local home for the developmentally challenged.  He has won numerous team awards including the Wolves Most Popular Player Award, Most Improved Player Award and was the Scholastic Player of the Month twice this season.

“John learned from Mickey’s leadership and always tried to exemplify his qualities to the younger players on the Sudbury Wolves hockey team,” said Wolves general manager Mike Foligno in his award nomination form. “His calming qualities and his confidence are attributes that other players respect.  He has been an excellent role model for many hockey players on our team and in the community.  We are truly thankful for having the opportunity to have known and worked with John.”

On the ice, Kurtz finished this season with a career-high 30 goals, including a team-high 10 goals scored on the power play.  He also added 16 assists for 46 points in 62 games.  He scored his first career hat trick November 20, as first star of a 3-0 win over the Saginaw Spirit.

The selection committee reviewed nomination forms submitted by OHL general managers on behalf of their individual team captains.  Nomination forms listed the characteristics of each captain both on and off the ice which demonstrate his strengths and commitment as a leader.  Dedication to work in the community, as well as special team and league achievements and awards received through hockey, education, and community service were also considered.

Kurtz will be formally presented with the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy at the OHL Awards Ceremony June 9 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Toronto – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Barrie Colts forward Bryan Cameron is the recipient of the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s Overage Player of the Year for the 2009-10 season.

Cameron led the OHL with 53 goals in 62 games and added 25 assists for 78 points to help the Colts capture their first Hamilton Spectator Trophy for first place overall in the regular season.  He registered a plus-minus rating of plus-38 which was 10th best in the league.  He was one of only two players to score 50 goals this season and recorded three hat-tricks and 23 multi-point games.

He was also among the league-leaders in power play goals with 18 and game-winning goals with seven.  His 53 goals set a new Colts’ record for goals in a season, surpassing Sheldon Keefe who scored 48 goals in the 1999-2000 season where he captured the league’s scoring title with 121 points.  Cameron becomes the first member of the Colts to win this award since it was first introduced following the 1983-84 season.

“It’s a great honor for me” said Cameron.  “We had great overage players here in Barrie including another great one on my line so I feel pretty lucky to win this award.  Luke (Pither) and I both had really good years and there are a lot of quality overage players around the league so it feels really nice to win this award and I am definitely grateful.”

A 21-year-old from Brampton, Ontario, Cameron began his OHL career with the Belleville Bulls where he spent four seasons.  He was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection in a season where he captured an OHL Cup championship title with the Toronto Marlboros.

He played in 318 career OHL games over five seasons producing 324 points including 184 goals and 140 assists.  His 81 points last season marked his best offensive year and earned him the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the Top Scoring Right Winger and a spot on the OHL’s First All-Star Team.  He was selected in the third round, 82nd overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the top overage player of the year as selected by all 20 OHL General Managers.  Teams were not permitted to vote for players from their own hockey club. Players received five points for a first place vote, three points for a second place vote and one point for a third place vote. Cameron received 59 points in the voting, just narrowly edging defenceman Jacob Muzzin of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds who received 58 points.  Zack Torquato of the Erie Otters finished third with 35 points.

Former winners of the trophy include Iain Fraser (Oshawa, 1989-90), Bill Bowler (Windsor, 1994-95), Dan Tessier (Ottawa 99-00), and Ryan Callahan (Guelph, 2005-06).  Justin DiBenedetto of the Sarnia Sting won the award last season after finishing third in league scoring with 93 points in 62 games.

The Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy was donated by the trainers of the Ontario Hockey League, in memory of the late Leo Lalonde, former Chief Scout of OHL Central Scouting.  Leo Lalonde was also formerly the chief scout for the Belleville Bulls as well as a scout for the Peterborough Petes. Cameron will be presented with the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy at the 2009-10 OHL Awards Ceremony, scheduled for June 9 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Former Erie Otters defenseman Paul Cianfrini has signed a professional contract with the International Hockey League‘s Port Huron Icehawks, the Otters announced Tuesday. Cianfrini is the second Otter from the 2009-10 team to sign a pro contract in the past week. Forward Zack Torquato signed with the ECHL‘s Idaho Steelheads last week.

Torquato had no points and a minus-1 rating in his first two games last weekend. But he wasn’t listed on the Steelheads’ playoff roster. Idaho finished the regular season with a league-leading 48-17-2-5 record. Cianfrini could make his pro debut on Tuesday night against the Flint Generals.

Former Erie Otters forward Zack Torquato has signed a professional contract with the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads, the Otters announced Friday. The Steelheads are affiliated with the NHL’s Dallas Stars and AHL’s Texas Stars, which has former Otter and Steelhead Luke Gazdic on the roster.

Torquato, 20, led the Otters with a career-high 93 points this season – the third-highest, single-season total in the franchise’s 14-year history. His 62 assists are a franchise record. His 269 career points rank second overall. His 31 goals also were a career high.

Torquato, a former No. 3 pick in the OHL Priority Selection, was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings in the sixth round of 2007 NHL Entry Draft. But the club chose not to sign him. Then before the season, the NHL’s Minnesota Wild didn’t invite Torquato to training camp after signing him to an amateur tryout contract.

Greg McKegg (Contributed/Erie Otters)GUELPH, Ontario – The Erie Otters might not face Kitchener in the first round after all.

With a 3-2 loss to Guelph, played in front of 4,979 at Sleeman Centre Friday night, the Otters fell to eighth in the Western Conference standings. Erie (32-28-5-2) stands one point behind the sixth-place Storm with one game left – tonight’s regular-season finale against London at Tullio Arena.

The Otters are percentage points behind Saginaw, which has a game in hand. If the OHL playoffs began today, the Otters would face top-seeded Windsor, defending league and Memorial Cup champion, in the opening round. Meanwhile, Guelph (34-29-3-1) would start the playoffs against Kitchener. The Storm head into the postseason on a roll. They have won four straight games and eight of their last 10.

Mathew Sisca’s power-play goal 7 minutes, 2 seconds into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie against the Otters. He scored less than 4 minutes after the Otters’ Greg McKegg scored his 37th goal of the season.

Zack Torquato assisted on the goal – his Otters’ single-season record 61st of the season. He broke Colin Pepperall’s mark of 60, set in 1997-98. Derek Holden scored Erie’s other goal.

Erie Otters goaltender Adam Courchaine was named OHL player of the week Monday for posting a 3-0-0-0 record, 1.67 goals-against average, .955 save percentage and two shutouts in four games.

He joins center Zack Torquato as the Otters’ weekly honorees this season, despite struggling in Sunday’s 7-5 loss to Kingston. He allowed four goals on 15 shots before being replaced by rookie Ramis Sadikov. Courchaine earned a no-decision in the game.

Courchaine is the second goaltender to earn the honor this season. Windsor’s Troy Passingham was selected for the week of Oct. 12-18. The Otters have two recipients in a season for the first time since defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo and goaltender T.J. Aceti in 2002-03.

Courchaine made 37 saves in regulation and overtime and three more in a shootout in a 1-0 win against Mississauga St. Michael’s last Monday. On Friday, he made 44 saves in a 5-2 win against Ottawa. He stopped 36 shots in a 6-0 win against Belleville on Saturday.

Courchaine topped Sarnia winger Tyler Peters (four goals, nine points in four games) and Plymouth forwards Tyler Seguin (six goals, eight points) and Robbie Czarnik (one goal, eight points).
