Erie Otters center Jeremy Gottzmann used the same Twist Conditioning program that helped him prepare for his rookie season in 2009-10.

But this time, the program, created by highly regarded personal trainer Peter Twist (whose top clients include the Vancouver CanucksSedin twins, Daniel and Henrik), was modified to help Gottzmann overcame the nagging leg problems that hampered him last season.

He has added stretching, swimming and biking to his weekly routine, which includes five off-ice sessions and four on-ice sessions and focuses on speed, agility, quickness, strength and power. These workouts have relieved the tightness that he encountered last season.

“My legs are in top shape right now,” he said. “I’m going to be able to skate a lot faster this year.”

Rick Gotkin (Contributed/USCHO.com)

The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey program has no NHL draft picks in its 23-year history.

Coach Rick Gotkin doesn’t expect that to change during this weekend’s draft at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

“It would be great,” said Gotkin, who has coached potential candidates, most notably Ben Cottreau (2004-08), Cullen Eddy (2006-10) and Scott Pitt (2007-10) in recent years.

Clint Thomas (1990-92) was chosen 136th overall by the New York Rangers in 1987 before transferring from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Jim Pollio (1991-92) was selected 243rd overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1989 before transferring to the Lakers from Plattsburgh (N.Y.) State.

Yet the Lakers, like the Atlantic Hockey Association, remain under the radar with NHL clubs, Gotkin said.

“The thing that we fight is our league is evolving,” he said. “When they’re taking college players, they’re taking them from the WCHA, Hockey East, CCHA and ECAC. I don’t think they’re drafting kids yet from our league.”

The Lakers and AHA have enjoyed success in other ways. Most recently, former Lakers Jamie Coghlan, Eddy, Brett Robinson, Matt Pierce and Scott Reynolds won a ECHL championship with the Cincinnati Cyclones last month. Chris Tanev, Rochester Institute of Technology‘s freshman defenseman, signed a three-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks on May 31.

“There’s no question our league gets better and better every single year,” Gotkin said. “But the NHL is still a little (focused on) the more high-profile leagues.”

LAS VEGAS (June 23) — Washington Capitals left wing Alex
Ovechkin
, who becomes the first player in National Hockey League history
voted a First Team All-Star in each of his first five seasons, highlights
the players named to the league’s First and Second All-Star Teams for
2009-10.

Ovechkin surpassed the mark of Montreal Canadiens Hall of Fame
goaltender Bill Durnan, named in his first four seasons from 1943-44
through 1946-47. Joining Ovechkin on the First Team is Capitals teammate
Mike Green, who earned his second consecutive berth on defense.

Each of the remaining First Team players is a first-time
selection, including two Chicago Blackhawks — defenseman Duncan Keith and
right wing Patrick Kane. The last time the Blackhawks boasted as many was
in 1992-93 (goaltender Ed Belfour, defenseman Chris Chelios). Other First
Team honorees are goaltender Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres and center
Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks.

Among those named to the Second Team is Canucks left wing Daniel
Sedin
, marking the first time in 36 years that brothers had earned berths
on post-season All-Star Teams in the same year. In 1973-74, Boston center
Phil Esposito earned First Team honors and Chicago goaltender Tony
Esposito
was voted to the Second Team.

Joining Daniel Sedin on the Second Team: goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov
of the Phoenix Coyotes, defensemen Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings
and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, center Sidney Crosby of the
Pittsburgh Penguins and right wing Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay
Lightning
.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of
the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular
season.
