In this, the final week of the season, Byham is one of hundreds of players trying to do whatever it takes to make the cut. In this video on the 49ers’ website, he talks about the importance special-teams play might make in the organization’s decisions.

Juer-gen Klins-mann! Juer-gen Klins-mann! Juer-gen Klins-mann!

When I met up with some German guys underneath the Eiffel Tower during the 1998 World Cup, they jokingly pointed to their drunken, sleeping friend (in mid-afternoon) and sang Juergen Klinsmann’s name.
I’m really sorry I don’t have a You Tube link to that.

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati might have been in that crowd. He seems obsessed with making Klinsmann the next U.S. soccer coach.

Bob Bradley’s contract does not end until December, and he is currently negotiating a possible stay for the next four years.

But if the above report is true, this is the second time in four years that Gulati has approached Klinsmann, who was first choice after the 2006 World Cup to take over the national team before Gulati eventually settled on Bradley.

One of the apparent sticking points that prevented Klinsmann from accepting the job last time was the 2007 Copa America — the South American championship. Klinsmann wanted the best players available for that tournament, but the federation would not make that guarantee with the Gold Cup being played the same year, and both tournaments were in the middle of the Major League Soccer season.

The U.S. is not entered in next year’s Copa America.

Klinsmann also wants to change the structure of the American soccer system. He believes the current system of youth development hinders the best athletes from rising to the top of the national program.

World Cup final referee admits error

English referee Howard Webb now says he should have red carded the Netherlands’ Nigel De Jong for his karate-kick spike to the chest of Spain’s Xabi Alosno during the World Cup final.

Brazil way behind in World Cup 2014 efforts

Brazil is apparently running into problems in preparations to host the 2014 World Cup. Get ready for rumors to run rampant over which country will replace Brazil as host. (United States, anyone?)

North Korean star survives, now playing in Germany

This player obviously survived the “public shaming” of players in North Korea after the World Cup.
