The Summer Huddle – Greenville

Greenville Trojans

Coach: Brian Herrick
greenville2008 overall record: 8-3
2008 region record (place): 5-2 (third place, Region 3)
Playoff results: Lost to General McLane 42-28 in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: C Alex Palmer, DE Andy Bayer, LB Taylor Malson, WR Rich Herron.
Top underclassmen: RB R.J. Malson, DE Dillon Sarcinella, WR/DB Nate Houpt, RB Dylan Zuschlag, OT Steve Pfaff, OG Pat Matusz, QB David Holiga.
Key games: Sept. 12 Wilmington, Oct. 23 at Sharon, Nov. 6 Slippery Rock
Outlook: Wilmington has to be considered the Region 3 favorite going into camp — only because the Greyhounds are the returns champions, but because they also were the 2008 PIAA Class AA titlists. Having said that, Greenville has to be considered a serious challenger given the talent expected to return for third-year coach Brian Herrick. There’s a chance the region title could be determined as early as Sept. 12, when the Greyhounds visit Stewart Field. … The Trojans return six players who were all-region selections last season. They also welcome back their leading rusher, passer and receiver. … Dylan Zuschlag averaged more than six yards per carry and led Greenville with 1,150 yards on the ground, including 255 yards and four TDs in the playoff loss to General McLane. Zuschlag received most of his handoffs from David Holiga, who completed nearly half of his attempts (55-of-112) for 610 yards and four touchdowns. Zuschlag caught 11 passes for 159 yards and three scores. Those figures were equaled or surpassed only by Nate Houpt, who hauled in 33 catches for 419 yards and three scores. … Greenville figures to be strong on both sides of the line. Holiga lost center Alex Palmer to graduation, but still should have all-region linemen Steve Pfaff and Pat Matusz for protection.
