PIAA Swimming Sneak Peek: Wednesday, Class AA boys

The countdown is on: The four-day PIAA swimming and diving championships open one week from today.

In today’s PIAA Sneak Peek, we’ll take a look at District 10′s Class AA perfomers who will be top medal contenders at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

In Class AA, two Fairview boys stand out. (Click below to read the rest of this post.)

Danny Roberts, Fairview: Top-seeded Class AA diver

Richard Petrella, Fairview: Highly seeded in 4 events

D-10 AA diving champion Danny Roberts is the No. 1 seed and a solid contender to win his first state title. As a freshman in 2009, he led placed second in District 10 and fifth in the PIAA. After the season, he was named an All-American after his films were reviewed by national officials.

As a sophomore, Roberts has been breaking school and meet records all season. His latest mark was a District 10 record of 516.60 points. That makes him the top seed by almost 60 points for next Saturday’s AA boys diving competition.

Another Fairview sophomore, Richard Petrella — also known as R.J. — has been dominating in the swimming events. He’s sort of D-10′s male version of Mercyhurst Prep star Marie Georger. Both swim the same events and set records, both are sophomores and both are headed to states in four events.

Petrella set District 10 Class AA records in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.30) and the 100 backstroke (53.37) last week. Aiming for his first individual state medal, he is seeded sixth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 back. He was a member of the Tigers’ eighth-place 200 medley relay team in 2009.

Fairview’s 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams featuring Petrella, Joe Nowak, Ryan Taylor and Wade Christensen figure to challenge for medals. Both are seeded fourth.

District 10′s hopes for a Class AA individual swimming state title appear to be limited because of the presence of the Hershey swim team. Hershey’s swimmers are top-seeded in eight of the 11 events, and in a couple of those events, they have the top two seeds. In many of the events, their times are significantly faster than the No. 2 seed.

Still, D-10 has medal contenders.

Franklin’s Brian Frederick is seeded fifth in the 100 breaststroke at 59.65.

The Mercyhurst Prep boys 200 medley relay team is looking for the Lakers’ first-ever boys medal. Mercyhurst Prep is seeded sixth in the event with a time of 1:40.78.

Titusville’s Alex Furlan, Corry’s Jacob Stockton, Oil City’s Jared Schwab and Mercyhurst Prep’s Conrad Kubaney are among those who could snag a medal if they improve on their D-10 times.
