PIAA Swimming Sneak Peek: Friday, Class AAA boys

The PIAA swimming and diving championships are only five days away, and the Varsity blog is getting District 10 swimming fans ready for the big meet with a daily Sneak Peek.

Today, we’ll look at the Class AAA boys. (Click below to read more.)

The past several years Cathedral Prep and McDowell have fared well in the Class AAA meet. This year, area AAA swimmers will have to improve their times considerably if they are to bring home medals from top-eight finishes.

The top seed among area swimmers is McDowell sophomore Kevin Intrieri, who had a dazzling D-10 time of 21.49 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. That mark left him only one-tenth of a second out of the No. 4 seed. Intrieri also is seeded 17th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.41.

The only other D-10 individual swimmer to rank among the top 20 in an event is Cathedral Prep’s Tommy Steele. Steele is seeded 18th in the 100 freestyle (47.60) and 19th in the 200 freestyle (1:45.54). Steele is capable of faster times and could sneak into the top eight in either event. He also anchors the 16th-seeded 400 freestyle relay and 22nd-seeded 200 free relay.

One other performer who could challenge for a medal is McDowell diver Robert Freeling. The three-time District 10 champion enters the meet with the 12th-best score of 420.80.  The top seed, Connor Kuremsky of North Allegheny, has a 591.50 total.
