Outlook: Cathedral Prep seemed to be on track to make another deep PIAA run last fall before McDowell pulled off a thrilling overtime upset in the District 10 Class AAA championship. The Ramblers are back to reclaim the D-10 title this fall but will have some big holes to fill. Russell Tattersall (Cincinnati), Brad Colvin (California, Pa.) and Max Lorei (John Carroll) have moved on to the collegiate level, while Teague Rupp, Erik Hultgren, Mitch Carrara and Brian Newell have graduated as well. Tattersall, Colvin and Hultgren were all-district and all-region first team selections as seniors. Carrara, Newell and Rupp were also named to the all-region first team and Tattersall was named the Region 6 Player of the Year. Prep was pretty balanced in 2010 but with a mix of offensive and defensive players gone, the Ramblers will look for some players to step up in training camp.
Prep’s returning core is pretty strong entering the season. Goalkeeper Joe Bloomstine did an admirable job replacing Mitchell Mack last fall and is back for his senior year. He is the only returning all-region member after being named to the first team at keeper. Jon Chereson, Greg Roos, Sean Culver and Connor Pletz are back on offense, while defensemen Corey Trocki, Ben Prylinski, Garrett Chase and Justin Burger will look to make an immediate impact. Jake Duska and Jason Roos are underclassmen that could see varsity time this fall. Once again, the Ramblers have a challenging schedule filled with out of District 10 powers. Prep only leaves Erie County six times in 18 games, but the Ramblers will have to deal with several WPIAL and out-of-state powers. The most interesting stretch will come at the beginning of October. Prep will take on Bishop Watterson out of Columbus as well as St. Francis and Aquinas Institute from New York. The Ramblers also have their second match with rival McDowell during that stretch and a road game to Peters Township.
