Jump Serve: Hickory

Hickory Hornettes
Coach (season): Nicole Biblis (1st season)
2010 overall record: 12-6
2010 region record (place): 10-4 (third)
2010 playoff results: Lost in District 10 Class AA pool play.
Top players lost: Brianna Wise, Chelsea Gilliland, Amber Wilterdink, Maddie Chavara
Top returning players: Lauren Lubarski, Taylor Woods, Kristen Belko, Caitlin Hull
Assistant coach: Claire Vellente
Outlook: Hickory made the District 10 postseason last fall but couldn’t get out of pool play. With a new coach in Nicole Biblis, the Hornettes will look to contend for the D-10 title. Hickory lost four talented players in Brianna Wise, Chelsea Gilliland, Amber Wilterdink and Maddie Chavara. Gilliland was an all-region second-team pick at libero last season. The Hornettes have a solid group back to lead the way. Lauren Lubarski and Taylor Woods return after being named to the all-region team last season, along with senior classmates Kristen Belko and Caitlin Hull. The four have been involved with Hickory volleyball their entire careers and have developed into strong leaders. The junior class could also have a strong presence on the team with Carley Chavara, Victoria Tomko, Courtney Maniscalo and Ashley Rose. Hickory plays in a tough region and will have to earn its way into the postseason. The Hornettes have the talent to compete for a D-10 title, but the season could come down to coming together and building chemistry as the season goes on.
