Denny Braendel presented $1,869 to the Joe Lunger Memorial Scholarship Fund on Friday. His widow, Sarah Lunger, accepted the donation.
Braendel sponsored the American Legion Junior and Senior All-Star baseball game at Jerry Uht Park this past July. Proceeds are awarded to an Erie County high school graduate to assist with first-year college tuition.
Lunger died in March 2010 after a brief illness. He coached Villa Maria for the first 16 years of the program’s history, leading the Victors to four District 10 titles and a spot in the 2006 PIAA championship game. He died March 18 after a brief illness at Hamot Medical Center.
Lunger also was a high school basketball coach and American Legion and youth baseball coach as well as the Erie Otters’ director of sales.
