PIAA girls tennis tournament updates

Thanks for checking the Varsity blog and updates of the District 10 entrants in Friday’s early rounds of the PIAA girls singles and doubles tennis tournament. Action begins at 9 a.m. at Hershey Racquet Club.

The district’s participants are Maggie McLaughlin (Mercyhurst Prep) in Class AA singles; Brittany McBride and Katie Elia (Mercyhurst Prep) in Class AA doubles; Adrianna Jeffress (McDowell) in Class AAA singles; and Maggie Erven and Larissa Chen (McDowell) in Class AAA doubles.

The latest update will be printed below, with earlier posts in the previous entries section.

Class AAA singles: District 10′s girls tennis season comes to a close as McDowell sophomore Adrianna Jeffress loses 6-2, 6-1 to Plum’s Ronit Yurovsky in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals in Hershey. None of the area qualifiers advanced to Saturday’s semifinals.

Class AA singles: Four-time District 10 Class AA champion Maggie McLaughlin’s high school career comes to a close in a three-set loss to Harriton’s Hannah Drayton. After losing the first set 6-2, McLaughlin won the second 6-4. However, Drayton pulled out a 6-4 win in the final set to eliminate McLaughlin. Both Mercyhurst Prep entrants have bowed out. McDowell’s Adrianna Jeffress is now District 10′s only hope.

Class AA doubles: Brittany McBride and Katie Elia got the attention of Harriton’s Rachel Benstock and Marni Blumenthal. The Lakers’ duo won the first set 6-4, but were swept 6-0, 6-0 in the ensuing two. Blumenthal is a returning PIAA AA doubles titlist.

Class AAA doubles: McDowell’s Maggie Erven and Larissa Chen were the first district entrants to be eliminated. Abington Heights seniors Courtney Ostrowski and Alexa Abdalla swept the Trojans 6-3, 6-3. Erven qualified for that portion of the state tournament with three different partners, including Jamie Keim in 2009 and Daraja Hill in 2010.

Class AAA singles: McDowell sophomore Adrianna Jeffress won her first-round rematch with Williamsport senior Taquoia Lee. Jeffress, who needed three sets to eliminate Lee in 2010, had an easier go this time with a 6-2, 6-1 sweep. She’ll face Plum’s Ronit Yurovsky, the defending state champion, in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal.

Class AA singles: Maggie McLaughlin advances to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Maria Snyder of Northern Bedford County. McLaughlin is currently playing a rematch against Harriton’s Hannah Drayton, who beat McLaughlin in three sets in the PIAA team competition.

Class AA doubles: Mercyhurst Prep sophomores Brittany McBride and Katie Elia defeated Cheyenne Feathers and Jill Penatzer of Windber 6-2-6-2. The Lakers’ duo will face Harriton’s Rachel Benstock and Marni Blumenthal in the quarter. Blumenthal is a returning state champion.
