District 10 football championship sites announced

The much-anticipated matchup between Cathedral Prep and Grove City will take place at Veterans Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. It will be the third-straight meeting between the two powerhouses for the District 10 Class AAA title. Last year’s game was played at Slippery Rock’s Mihalik-Thompson Stadium with the Ramblers prevailing 28-16. Also on Friday will be the Class A championship between unbeaten Sharpsville and red-hot West Middlesex at Hickory High School at 7 p.m.

In Class AA, Hickory and General McLane will play in a battle of No. 2 seeds. The Hornets and Lancers will play at Edinboro’s Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s D-10 semifinals. Hickory won 29-28 in a thriller last fall.

Fans can get live updates from all three games this weekend on the Varsity blog.

  1. Angie Free says:

what day does General Mclane play on? Friday or Sat.?

  2. lynn says:

Home field advantage for prep. Interesting.

Home field advantage GM also interesting.

  3. Lucinda says:

So Tom can you answer this question for me? Why does GM get to play yet another playoff game basically at home in Edinboro?

  4. Tom Reisenweber says:

    Saturday

  5. Tom Reisenweber says:

Was it interesting Prep played Grove City at SRU last year?

  6. Tom Reisenweber says:

I’m guessing that Allegheny isn’t available or maybe big enough on Saturday? There’s no natural midpoint between the two schools outside of Allegheny and maybe they think Hickory will travel well.

    Those are my best guesses.

    Thanks,
    Tom

  7. BC says:

Prep plays at Vets Stadium, technically not their home field, the Events Center is. Grove City and Prep both being #1 the last two years in the South & North, have alternated sites to play. That’s what it should be. (Grove C played at SRU last year, about 6-7 miles away from them?)

  8. Tom Reisenweber says:

    BC,
Exactly. I’ve been trying to warn people on the blog all year that this year’s game would be in the north because of D-10 alternating sites.

    Thanks,
    Tom

  9. Mike Boldish says:

General Mclain and Hickory. Was Meadville not available? I’m pretty sure that’s turf and somewhat of a midpoint.

  10. Tom Reisenweber says:

Not sure they have the seating for a playoff game.

  11. cg says:

don,t care where the game is, this should be the best d-10 game this year. both teams look good, grove city is often an after thought in Mercer county, every one focuses on A schools and sharon/hickory thats who buys the most papers. Looking forward to this game, The vet is a beatiful place to play football, and a wonderful place for the fans. GC fan!

  12. Tom Reisenweber says:

Should be rocking on Friday. I suggest everyone get there early for a parking spot and to get a seat. I can see more than half of the Vet being filled with not only fans from both teams but the casual football fan as well.

    Thanks,
    Tom

  13. made to comment says:

You don’t think? I mean this is two AA teams, not PSU vs OSU. I’m not buying it. There’s a reason it’s being played where it’s at and everyone knows it. Oh well….

  14. Tom Reisenweber says:

They are Class AA teams but they each have a huge following. Edinboro was packed last year for a semifinal game let alone a championship.

  15. Mike says:

Hi Tom wasn’t sure where to ask this question. I was just wondering if you knew who votes for the all region teams? Do they count just the regular season or do they add in the play-offs?
    Any info would be appreciated.

  16. Tom Reisenweber says:

    Mike,
The all-region teams are voted on by the coaches after the regular season is complete. The all-district team is decided after all teams are eliminated as the playoffs are taken into account with the regular season for all-district.

    Thanks,
    Tom

  17. Ron88 says:

sorry lynn…prep was away last year home this year and will be away next year….do you see the way it works? stop crying about PREP and accept them for the powerhouse they are.

  18. FLB Fan says:

    Lynn,
Are you complaining? Just be happy your team is still alive in the playoffs…I’m sure most fans would be willing to drive an hour to watch their team in late November..

  19. BC says:

If Prep wins, their next opponent would be KNoch(from Saxonburg, south of Butler) or Montour(McKees Rocks, just north of Pittsburgh). I believe District 7 is host, would be at North Allegheny I suppose since northernmost large capacity stadium? What do you think?

  20. Tom Reisenweber says:

    BC,
That would probably be the best site. That is where Prep played West Allegheny two years ago and last year D-7 had to come to the Vet so this year will be back in the south.

    Thanks,
    Tom

  21. Donald Knauff says:

Is there a site that I can watch thr Gove City vs Prep Game. I am sick and can’t make the trip.

  22. Jeff Osborne says:

    Tom,
I was reading your play by play of the AA game and someone asked about a offsides on a kickoff that went out of bounds in the GC game. In high school football offsides is a dead ball foul and the play is shut down right there. They have no option to take the ball at the spot where it went out. The offsides must be enforced.

  23. Tom Reisenweber says:

    Jeff,
I think the question was can they just take it at a designated yard line instead of a rekick like the 40 in the NFL. I believe you have the option and it didn’t work out for Prep making Grove City kick it off a second time.

    Thanks,
    Tom
