PIAA winter enrollments released

The rivalry is back. Villa Maria and Mercyhurst Prep have been confirmed as Class AAA girls basketball teams for the next cycle. The two rivals will likely be placed in the same region and would play each for the District 10 championship if both were to make it that far. Girls basketball had plenty of movement as North East, Fairview and General McLane have all dropped to Class AA from AAA. West Middlesex and Saegertown are bumping up to AA and Reynolds is dropping into A.

An interesting shakeup occurred in boys basketball. Class AAAA will only have three teams. Cathedral Prep and McDowell, of course, with Central Tech. The Falcons’ enrollment forced them into AAAA, while Strong Vincent and George Junior have dropped into AAA. That leaves D-10 with 17 AAA teams for the new cycle as Titusville has dropped into AA.

Another interesting development will be the regional alignment in girls AA. If i counted correctly there will be 18 total AA teams which is more than A or AAA by a nice margin. With Saeg, Wood, SPA and Lakeview in between Erie and Mercer County…..how will they align. God forbid they go to 3 regions like they did this past cycle in AAA for the boys teams. But if that is their model then it will probably happen. Then for playoffs D10 will have to select 5 teams and then seed accordingly. Any thoughts Tom?

I think you would have to go to three regions of six and not go to two regions of nine because of three counties involved but there is a precedent with boys Region 6. You never know until District 10 confirms the new regions.

If I had to go two regions, I’d go:
    Region A
General McLane, Girard, Northwestern, Fairview, Seneca, North East, Union City, Iroquois and maybe Cambridge Springs
    Region B
Sharon, Greenville, Mecrcer, Wilmington, Lakeview, Maplewood Sharpsville and West Middlesex and Saegertown

The tough thing there is breaking up Crawford teams but it might be the only choice. Going with three regions of six would be tough because it doesn’t really work out between north, south and central evenly.

Tom, the spring sport breakdown is on the PIAA web site

Yes I wanted to wait to post them here until later on so the basketball scores weren’t buried.

    Thanks,
